5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
If you have a 2010 then thats what the owners mani says 10k. Im actually changing my oil at every 7k. Its still fairly new idea that toyota tells us to do. which is going against years of people changing every 3k recommended. So some will say no but remember toyota says yessss!!! lol
I would change the first oil change at 5k and then 10k afterward.

I'd say do 5k, or at most 7k, 10k is fairly excessive, even if the manual says so. It doesn't hurt to change it more often anyways, for parts, synthetic oil and filter can come out to around $30 on sales anyways, so why not.

Synthetic oils, with all of their detergents, actually do the most "harm" to the engine between 0-3,000 miles. The oil is at its peak protection level from 3,000-7,500 miles, and then after it's still good until over 10,000 miles. 10,000 mile oil changes, while new to Toyota, are not new to the automotive world. The Germans have been running them for over a decade and their intervals often exceed 10,000 miles. Run a Used Oil Analysis if you really want to be sure just how good these oils are and you'll see that 10,000 is more than adequate for intervals.
It depends on what engine you have. If you have the 3.5 V6 it takes 5w-30 oil, which should be replaced at 5k. If you have the 3.5 I4 it takes 0w-20 oil, which Toyota recommends to be replaced at 10k. Coming from religiously changing the oil on my old 98 Sunfire every 2500 miles, I think I'll do my I4 every 5k. I do half and half city/highway so it's a little harder on the car.

Personally when it comes to oil changes in the car, I would trust Toyota engineers who built and designed the car over random people on the internet any day. But hey that's just me.

There was a time in the past when I would have agreed with you, but ever since this big disaster
I can't say I have 100% confidence in Toyota engineers anymore.
Let me add that I know people who own the slugde monster camry's and because they changed their oil every 3000 miles with synthetic, they have never had a problem.
These days, it is really hard to believe any "generic" rule for oil changes. Running a used oil analysis every "x" number of miles until you find the end of the life of oil for your car in your driving conditions is the only 100% safe way to go anymore.
