30K service

My dealer wants 460+tax for the 30K miles service. What are my options here for 30K service? And, if I do not take it to the dealer, does it void my warranty?

lol is it me or do dealers try to take advantage right when your warranties almost over. 30k seems like a ideal time for this service since at 35k who would go to the dealer for the service since your warranty period is over at 36k. Either way that's a lot of money.

Almost 500 bucks?!?! 30k service includes Oil/Filter Change, Rotate Tires, Replace Air Filter, Replace Cabin Air Filter, and maintenance inspection. I know our dealer charges about $80 to replace both filters and $20 for a tire rotation. Add the cost of your oil change (depending on which engine you have, it's probably between $35-$60), and you're up to a maximum of $160 without the cost of the inspection.

The inspection consists of:
Checking/topping off all fluids
Inspect ball joints
Inspect brake lines and hoses
Inspect brake linings/pads
Inspect drive shaft boots
Inspect exhaust pipes and mounting
Inspect fuel lines/fuel tank cap gasket
Inspect radiator and condenser
Inspect steering gear box

To be honest, when I worked in the shop at my dealer, hardly anyone checked any of this at 30K. I mean, the car has 30K, do we really think the fuel lines are bad or your ball joints are completely gone already? Obviously they will scan for anything out of the ordinary but won't look everything over in detail. Tell them to forget it-go for the oil/tire rotation/filters. More than enough. If you do that they won't (and can't) void your warranty.

Well said. I think the premium is in the labor per hour cost, which im pretty sure they just scan for things not thoroughly check them like they supposed to. My mom used to be one of those people who would take her car to the dealer religiously but they just kept giving her 300-500 maintenance until she got fed up with them. I maintain her car now and the car runs perfectly fine. She never replaced or fixed anything except did routine maintenance. Its a 05 Rav4 she barely drives it. she only got 40k on it still.

I know man, i was planning on having it done until they told me the price. i was like forget that, and plus my sister's fiance use to work at the toyota dealer as a service advisor and he said the 30k service is not necessary just a oil change is fine and tire rotation. Plus the other stuff you can do yourself which i did. Dealers are out to get us, so before my warranty is over soon im going to find stuff wrong with my car. lol currently i just had 3 TPS replaced because the stupid tire light blinks and says it has a malfunction in the TPMS. Funny thing is couple days later after they replaced them it came back again so i'm taking it back this thursday.

You realize they check all of that for free most the time just when you get an oil change? They try to find things to upsell. get the oil changed and tires rotated.

Not all of it. The fluids yes but the techs won't be bothered to look over the exhaust, ball joints, drive shafts, etc. And yes upselling is major, but at 30K you won't really find much to upsell. Filters, but those need to be done anyway. Maybe some wipers....that's about it.

They don't replace your wipers at 30K miles for free, do they?

TOTAL RIP OFF.

Other than fluid changes and tire rotations, most "major service" consists of inspecting this or that. Waste of money at 30K for sure.

I think I paid $169 for my 30,000 mile service and I thought that was a rip off! Why don't you see what the other dealers charge for it and do some price shopping.

As others have suggested, just get the oil changed, rotate tires, and change the air filter and cabin A/C filter yourself as they are both really simple.

My dealer rotates tires for free with the oil change – but I guess not all dealers do this.

No that's an extra cost.....wipers are supposed to be good for 1 year so they don't really throw it in to the maintenance.
