07 Camry engine replacement

I bought an 07 Camry with the I4 used in April of 08 from a toyota dealer. About a month later I took it in for an engine tapping noise. The said it was a hose clamp hitting the engine wall. The noise was still there after I left. Reading the forums these engines do have a noise. So March of 2010 I take it back before the warranty is up to have the noise checked again. I'm told its normal. Today I took the car to the local mom and pop shop to have the brakes checked. They are very concerned about the noise. So I take it to the local dealer here in Virginia Beach. Right away the tech there tells me its a rod and I need a new engine. I am shocked. After the rep did some checking on the service history, he found something interesting. The original owner in another state brought it in for oil filter missing. He turned down having the engine torn down to find out the damage. he turned it in a few weeks later. The adviser gave me a copy of the service history. Fast forward to my dealer buying it at an auction. In the service history it shows they took the engine for the same thing. The adjusted the balance shafts and it still had the tapping noise. A quote from the service history. It looks to me like they knowingly sold me a lemon. I asked them what they are going to do about it. They said they will get back to me. What do you guys think?

Sounds like you really have a good case. Everything is documented. Did you buy the car from a Toyota dealership?

You bought it from a Toyota Dealer ?

It has a Toyota warranty?

Call Toyota USA and open up a case?

Go back to any toyota dealer and make them fix it.

Hang on to all paper work and documentation.

It's not so much a lemon as a dealer oh-crap-we-bought-this-car-at-auction-and-it's-messed-up story. Simply put, they bought it, knew it had big issues, and ignored it, hoping you wouldn't notice. You did. Time to make them own up to their mistake.

Good thing you didn't take it to the same dealer. Prolly would have gave you the run around. The cars not a lemon more like a victim of the idiot previous owner. If he denied having them tear it down and seeing what the problem was, im guessing he didn't tighten or put the filter back on lol. And would have immediately turned it around on him. Instead he dumped his problem and purchased another car. Sad thing about it when you go into the dealer for a used car and they give you the word "Certified". They make you feel reassured the car will be a quality product. Wrong!

With a cerified toyota it comes with a hefty powertrain warranty, however, and that should still be covered.

The dealer wants to see my receipts for all my oil changes. I change the oil myself. Now I'm just dealing with Toyota.

I am sure you can go back on your CC or get some proof from your auto store, or look in your cardboard box. But you have that history already from the original owner and proof that the problem was not taken care of.

Yes Toyota Corperate is the way to go, Good Luck and keep us posted.

Keep a copy all paper work and corespondence.

I hope you have the print out showing the original owners dealings with the Toyota Dealer etc.

I am rooting for you...kick some dealer ass.
