2.4 engine idle adjustment

I have an '07 Camry with the 2.4 engine. The idle is fine when the car is in nuetral or park but when in gear and the AC running and stopped at a traffic light the engine has a small vibration. How can I up the idle speed to fix this minor complaint?

take it to a garage, they can probably change the parameters of the computer.

try cleaning the ground wires for the throttle body. some times if they get corroded it can cause a malfunction like that.

I sure miss he "good ol' days" when fixing the idle meant finding a small screwdriver and turning the screw in the carb linkage!!!

Idle speed is not directly adjustable - the ECU controls entirely through Idle Air Controller (IAC). Get a scan tool and see if the engine idle speed is at spec, what the IAC duty cycle is, EGR function parms, and the O2 response. If all is good, look at the following:

  • Clean throttle body - folks swear by "Seafoam" - do search. "Carb Cleaner" will do as well.
  • If the miles a getting close to the plug service interval, replace the plugs.
  • Ensure EGR valve is closed and clean - that'll mess up idle.
  • Make sure the tube from throttle body to air cleaner isn't cracked or loose - that will cause other drivability issues as well, but it's a quick check.
  • Look at engine mounts - esp the 'dogbone' mount. Bad motor mounts will cause perceived vibration for an engine in perfect tune.
Keep in mind the 'old school' curb idle adjustment was a 'hack' that was often used to cover up the real problem, and more often than not resulted in high HC pollution from the mechanical fault that was root cause. I, for one, don't miss dinking with points and carbs every few months, or the horrid pollution the old stinkpots produced.
