Canada Broken lug nut - Suggestions, please (photos)

Sigh...
The stud is OK
The lug nut broke off (it is the anti-theft Toyota lug nut. so it is completely smooth on the outside).
Suggestions?

Obviously I do not want to damage the wheel, or the stud

Thanks so much!

What a crappy weekend
First time in my life that it happens to me...

get a socket that is just barely bigger than the nut, and HAMMER it in good ... since yours is broken your gonna want it to reach the very back...

then take it off with a breaker bar or torque wrench

I was getting ready to rotate the wheels, so I put the key for the lock in place, gave it a go, and it didn't budge. I tried a lot harder.... the key went flying off with the broken pieces

It was the first lug nut that I tried to loosen.... Just for comparison, I tried to loosen the lock from the other side, and it came off easily.

I am going to try the socket method tomorrow, but the thing is that the outside of the lock is soo smooth... not sure it is going to get enough grip.

Any specific tool to remove it? My brother at the phone mentioned something specially design for this situation, you hammer it too, but he doesn't remember the name or who sells it

Thank you for your comments

I think what you have in mind is a bolt extractor. It has a spiral cut inside that catches the fastener as you turn the nut CCW.

Something like this: http://www.irwin.com/tools/browse/sc...olt-extractors

It's something you can try, its ghetto but it does get the job done.

Getting specialized tools might cost more $$ or take more time. (shipping/ordering)

I help out at my friend's shop sometimes, when we can't get the lugs out, we hammer the socket in slightly and take it out

there's sockets also that are specifically for this too

I once had a lug nut strip out because the shop that last installed the wheel used an impact gun with a too-high torque setting. I ended up having to drill down the center of the stud until the lug nut popped off, then I replaced the stud.

np, it comes in handy at times like these.

These tricks tend to save time and money, have you heard about setting a tire onto its bead with starting fluid?

You mean spraying that stuff inside and then igniting it to use the explosion?

actually, the kit isn't too much money, and in the future you can help someone else out if you wanted to.

http://www.thefind.com/hardware/info...ug-nut-remover

and here is a general google search for others:

http://www.google.com/search?q=broke...ient=firefox-a

now, what i have done in the past (when i turned wrenches for a living), was that i would buy a can/bottle of Anti-seize (from any auto parts store) and put a very thin coating on each lug nut. this WILL NOT allow the nuts to work loose.........oil does, but not Anti-seize...........

after many years of working hard to remove locking lug nuts, i couldn't appreciate buying the kit so much, and using the anti-seize.
