5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am a new owner of a 2008 Camry SE. The lights have a setting called "OFF/DRL" but when I have my lights at this setting all my lights are off, that is the daytime running lights are not on. IS THIS NORMAL?
Also,
To get my DRL on, I have to turn the lights to "auto" but I really don't like this cause I find the sensor is VERY sensitve and during a cloudy day my lights go on and off and on and off etc... does this make sense?
The funny thing is that my old Toyota Celica light sensor was never this sensitive.

"DRL OFF" = all lights off.
"AUTO" = DRL on during the day, headlights go on at night.
Middle Position = parking lights on + DRL on all the time.
"ON" = headlights are on all the time.
The dealership can change the sensitivity of the automatic headlamps. Although depending on the dealer, they may charge you for it.

When I first bought my car, the sensor was very sensitive, but now the sensor becomes less sensitive. I remember when passing under a short bridge, my headlights used to be on immediately, but now they remains off. Besides, now my headlights are on only when most of other cars on the roads have their headlights on (about 7pm in a sunny day here). I don't think the dealer changes it, but I wonder how could the car adjust this itself!
That OFF position is also DRL OFF. I just leave it on auto.. Who really cares if my lights go on when it's unusually overcast or under a bridge? If it's so overcast that my lights turn on, I should probably have them on anyway which I usually do. If I'm under a bridge.. I might seem silly to other drivers w/o auto lights but who cares? I don't.

Mine doesn't have an Auto setting, which suits me just fine. I just wish I could have the park lights active with the car in gear. Instead, I get DRL with no other running lights, which is stupid. There are times when it is courteous to not have the headlights on, but still a really good idea to have the rest of the lights on. As for my DRL, they stay off.
You don't want the sensor to be too sensitive, especially when you have HID. You don't want those ballasts go on and off every time you pass a bridge for like 2 seconds.
I decided to resurrect this tread.
was looking pretty long time, but found no answer on my question:
can I disable AUTO position on light switch on gen 6?
I want to have:
OFF.
AUTO-disabled.
Parking ON.
LOW beams ON.
I want to be able to turn parking lights when I want without going through AUTO mode, which turns on low beams even when it just little dim outside.
don't want to turn on and off ballasts just to switch to parking lights mode.
I think it can be done by manipulating light switch wires and want to see if some one got it done already.
