5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My Toyota Camry 2006 steer wheel sounds a click under my hand when I drive at low speeds, especially from a stop to go. Turning the steer when the car is not moving is OK, but turning and moving or even when I am behind a red signal and want to accelerate after green light it makes a short click. The sound is difficult to hear but I feel it under my hand, but after a long drive it got worst which can also be heard.
Thanks mike for your reply. Could you tell me if I need to replace it how much would it cost approximately?
I bought this car recently from a dealer. I may force them to fix it for me if it costs a lot.
I recently had this done to my 07 Camry 4 cylinder. Total bill from the dealer was around $375, although I have the extended warranty and that bill was picked up by Toyota. Labor was only 9/10ths of an hour (if I remember the TSB on this correctly), so the part was around $275.

Do a search on intermediate steering shaft. Hard to know if your issue is the same but there was a lubrication issue with the intermediate shaft which caused a noise during low speed steering manuevers (like backing out of a garage and turning the wheel slightly.
Anyway, the fix can be a DIY job with a can of silicone lube. You have to lie upside down so you can see the splined joints and spray lube into them. It fixed the problem on my 2005.

I guess mine is the same issue. I have seen the TSB from Toyota which looks pretty straight forward. I am gonna get a quote from a Toyota dealer for doing the job. If their offer is not reasonable, I will get my own mechanic to do it for me. I was planning to do it myself, but I thought maybe I shouldn't do that at least for the first time.

Have you check both CV axle shafts? I'm not sure if you meant just one click or a constant clicking. But being a 06' it's should go bad but it won't hurt to check. Sorry if I'm completely off
I had to replace the intermediate steering shaft before on my 01. It would click once when I change direction; stop and moving. Nothing $15 from the slavage yard can't fix.
I had the intermediate steering shaft replaced on my '08 Camry just recently, at around 40,000 miles. I had the same exactly clicking noise, and it was driving me insane. The dealership quoted me $500-600 for the part and labor, so I took it to my uncle who's a mechanic. He got the part for around $230, and charged me about $250 at the end, parts and labor. Apparently it's a common issue, as he's done it before on lots of Camrys.
i had a similar problem on my '03 except mine only does it after it sits for a few hours. i keep wanting to take it in to the dealer for them to look at it but i never have time.

Finally had the grinding/cranking noise from the steering wheel on my 2011 Camry LE figured out and fixed by my local dealership. What they initially ruled out as "harmless plastic rubbing" noise turned out to be far more serious than that. After multiple inspections they had to replace the spiral cable and the spiral cable sub assembly in order to fix the problem.
They kept my car overnight. Even though they are denying, I strongly believe they changed the whole steering wheel assembly. The plastic cover on the steering wheel was slightly discolored due to sunlight exposure when I dropped the car, but when I picked up the car, the plastic looked brand new with no discoloration whatsoever.
The part numbers they replaced are
893991 SPIRAL CABLE
1 84306-06150 SPIRAL CABLE SUB ASSEMBLY.
I had that noise on my 08. I did not follow the TSB but I used white lithium grease spray and paper clip to push the grease into the spline.
I worked for me (so far 5K miles and still no noise). Took me 5 minutes.

I got the squeak to go away with some bearing grease that I bought at AutoZone. It's probably been 1,000 miles since I did that and it doesnt squeak anymore. I will try to get up a video of where the noise actually comes from on the '02-'06 models.

you might not pushed the grease all the way in to the shaft. I sprayed white lithium grease to the spline (did not take the shaft out but I can get the sprayer straw go the right location as mention in the TSB).
Here is the TSB on how to fix it: http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...sb-0296-08.pdf
