5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Dear Gen 5 Troopers, after you hit the 100K milestone, what engine oil do you use? Think is the best to use? Conventional, Synthetic Blend, or Full Synthetic? And which Brand? To keep these powerhouse refuse to die engines running smooth for the next 100K miles:
How do you vote?
1. Castrol Edge
2. Penzoil Ultra
3. Mobil 1 Extended Perforamance
4. Quaker State Advanced Durability
5. Valvoline MaxLife

Personally I use Amsoil on my car with 175,000 miles on it and I change my oil every 10k miles, but on my wifes car I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I've seen tests and the closest thing to Amsoil that you could buy off the shelf is Mobil 1 Extended Performance.
Thanks mate for your kind feedback. I have not done so yet, but I may try that Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I have been nervous to put full syn or syn blend in my engine after driving for over 100K miles strictly on toyota dealership dino conventional. by the way toyota oil, oem oil, is full dino right?

You're welcome. I've been running fully synthetic since I had my car though. I'm not quite sure what you mean by dino, but as far as I know Toyota only uses Synthetic if you ask them to with the exception of the new ones that run that 0W20 oil.
I personally run Mobil 1 full synthetic in all of my cars. It is the cheapest (Approx $4.50 qt if you buy at Costco with coupon) and probably the most accessible full synthetic. So far I have 179K on my camry and it runs fine. A bit of FYI when transitiong from a conventional oil to a full synthetic on a higher mileage vehicle... Synthetic will actually clean out the sludge buildup in your motor... this translates into a fair amount of black smoke coming out of your tailpipe when the car is under heavy load (like accelerating from a stop). I do not believe this is bad for your car just something to be aware of. I would recommend performing an engine flush before going to synthetic.
Oh yeah, I also go 7-8K miles between oil changes when using a full synthetic on my Camry.

I am at around 120k miles and use normal Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30 not highmileage.
I have about 110K on my Camry and I still use 5W30 as well. I don't think that this mileage is high enough to warranty special blends yet - especially if you've been frequently changing your oil from day 1. I do mine every 5000km.

copy that mate, i have been doing oil changes every 5000 miles since 2005 with Toyota Genuine Motor Oil sold at the service center. but i am now going to break with that tradition, and so far no problems, so your statement sounds excellent, so, maybe i follow your thought on this one, or still consider to switch to full synthetic. however, what i really want is to keep that engine clean, no sludge, so maybe oil with detergents is the way to go, out of all the brands, find one that has the most detergents and additives that dont hurt the seals, etc.
