89k miles, is it time for new struts ?

Hi all,

I've got an 05 Camry with 89k miles on it and I just wondering if it's time for new struts and this is my scenerio:
+ I've been having noise from the tires and I took it to Firestone since they're the one who replaced my 17" Potenza tires where I only had 34 k miles on the tires. They said I need 4 new tires and 4 new struts since won struts cause my tires won unevenly.
+ I don't trust Firestone since they claimed struts need to be replaced every 50k miles and I've been driving 3 different gen of camry and never have to replace struts at 89k miles.
+ I did a bounce test and the car only bounce once when I pressed down and released.
+ I don't see any leaks from the struts.
+ I'm not sure where the causes of the tire noise and if I can't find and fix the cause, I afraid I replaced a new set of tires, it's going to happen again. The only suspected cause is from the struts.

All advices would be appreciated.

Shocks and struts do not require replacing at specific mileage intervals like filters or spark plugs, but they do wear out and eventually have to be replaced. How long a set of original equipment shocks will last is anybody's guess. Some original equipment shocks may be getting weak after only 30,000 or 40,000 miles. Struts usually last upwards of 50,000 or 60,000 miles.
But when exactly a shock or strut needs to be replaced is hard to say. Because the damping characteristics of shocks and struts deteriorate gradually over time, the decline in ride control often passes unnoticed. So by the time to think you need new shocks or struts, it's usually way past the point when they should have been replaced.
One way to evaluate your need for new shocks or struts is to consider how your vehicle has been handling and riding lately. Does it bounce excessively when driving on rough roads or after hitting a bump? Does the nose dip when braking? Does the body roll or sway excessively when cornering or driving in crosswinds? Does the suspension bottom out when backing out of the driveway or when hauling extra passengers or weight?
A "bounce test" is still a valid means of checking the dampening ability of shocks and struts. If the suspension continues to gyrate more than one or two times after rocking and releasing the bumper or body, your shocks or struts are showing their age and need to be replaced.
Why Replace Them?

Weak shocks and struts won't necessarily create a driving hazards if you continue to drive on them, but there are studies that show worn shocks increase the distance it takes to stop a vehicle on a rough surface. Increased body sway due to weak shocks or struts can also increase the risk of skidding on wet or slick surfaces.
Worn shocks and struts also increase suspension wear (though marginally) but can have an effect on tire wear. If the shocks .
The reason why most people decide to have worn shocks or struts replaced, however, is to improve overall ride quality. If you're sick of bouncing and rocking on rough roads, a new set of shocks or struts will firm up your suspension and restore proper ride control.
If you're interested in performance handling, you can upgrade to premium "gas" charged shocks or struts. These are charged with high pressure nitrogen gas to help minimize foaming in the hydraulic fluid inside the shock. This lessens "fade" on rough roads and helps the vehicle maintain better ride control when cornering.

for me personally, when the ride isn't comfortable any more or by at least 60,000-65,000 miles, i will replace them.

my 2005 camry has 115K miles the struts are like a brand new baby. so depends on how you feel the ride or if you want to mod the car, then you change them for something more jazzy with rims and wheels, etc. like 18" rims, etc. tint down, fogs, spoiler, etc... ram intake, catback,

It depends on road condition and driving style. But in general most of the damping are gone by 50K miles. That's even the recommendation from the OEM manufacturer. (KYB) As other said, many owners drive a lot longer than that. So YMMV. Struts degrade gradually it may be hard to notice.

Not to hijack this thread but I have 179,000 miles on my stock struts... Do you think it is time I replace them?

OK, just being a smart ass. I had too much coffee *snort* *laugh*

It really depends on the road conditions were you drive. For example my struts are fairly worn out but I didnt notice until around 140K miles. They still work OK as they dampen fine. They just make a clanking noise on uneven road surfaces. I say as long as your car doesnt handle irratically then you can stretch it out for a while. Poor dampening will affect your braking on uneven road surfaces in which case I would most definitely replace. From the description it sounds like your struts are OK. Maybe try a different brand of tire and get an alignment. I have had the best luck with Michelin tires as I have had balancing issues with BFgoodrich and Bridgestones (aka Firestone) in the past.

U should replace them every 1,000 miles with a stiffer struts. 500 miles if U have the money.
