5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My wife just had her o4 Camry LE serviced (75K miles) and now she finds that as she walks away from the car (leaving the doors unlocked), she hears a click and finds that the doors have looked themselves.
I thought that was supposed to happen when you put the car in gear.
Part of the service was to replace the lights for the Fan/Temp/Air Distribution panel. Could the mechanic have reset something?

read the owners manual, as mine says that after 60 seconds, it will lock.
2004 Owners Manual, page 19 describes three modes of automatic locking, all of which require that the ignition be ON, all doors are closed and the shift is moved out of Park. Nothing about 60 seconds.
If the doors were locked and she opens the car with the fob but fails to manually open a door, they will relock in a minute. If she was driving the car, stops and does not lock the door, then I believe the doors should remain unlocked.

She was driving the car, pulled into the garage, shifted to Park, shut off the ignition, opened the driver door, got out, shut the driver door, walked away. After some undetermined time, the doors locked themselves.

What year is yours? What page in the the OM?
i have a 2010......page 33 of the owners manual....

unlocked, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again."
there will be times i am washing my car. i clean the inside, then when done i close my doors. as i go for the garden hose, the car locks up.....
when your wife parks the car, it unlocks when she puts it into park, but then it will lock itself in 60 seconds. but if she goes back and opens the door (with-in 60 secs), it will not lock, till she closes the door again and walks away.

i suspect your car always did this, but no one ever paid any attention to it. it is also possible at one time or another the control unit for the power door locks had stopped working for whatever reasons, maybe the battery got disconnected in the past, or maybe other interior work was done....have you owned this car since brand new....??
in any event, the tech in of himself would not have ordinarily caused anything to happen, except maybe he disconnected the battery, and when re-connected, the computer re-learned its programming and the doors starting functioning like they are supposed to. maybe the door lock function is noted elsewhere in the owner's manual, like maybe the 'security section"? instead of the power door lock section...???
i know that if you unlock the car with the keyfob and dont open the door at all, the car will relock itself for safety purposes after a determined period of time.. if this happened after she has stopped driving, then there might be something going on... do you have an aftermarket alarm on there at all?
Well I'm pretty sure my 2009 will remain unlocked forever unless I accidentally unlock it with remote.
That means if I turn off my car and leave, it stays unlocked until I lock it. It's probably a good thing so your kids don't get trapped inside or something.
If I unlock my car but never open the door..... then it will lock itself automatically as the car assumes you pressed the button by accident.

It never did this before. In fact, she now reports that it has stopped doing this. Perhaps it had to do with Halloween. :-)
No the only mention of automatic locking for TWO THOUSAND FOUR (note: 04; not 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 or 10 as many respondents seem to own :-) is mentioned only on page 19.

1) That may be true. However she claims that she did not unlock and fail to open.
2) No aftermarket anything on this car.
