Post Intermittent Remote Keyless

My father has an 06 Camry with remote keyless entry. Recently his primary remote has become intermittent. Sometimes it will not work at all. And when it does work it works close and far away. The remote's battery has been replaced. But the problem persists. The second backup remote is exhibiting the same symptoms.

It shouldn't be a programming issue because both remotes still intermittently work and should be synchronized with the car's receiver. The entire keyless system is OEM not aftermarket. We haven't made any attempts to fix the problem yet. I have no idea where to even begin at this point. Can someone please give me a few suggestions to try?

I won't see him until the weekend. Your input is appreciated.

It is very ironic that I'm reading this. This the second time in as many weeks I've seen this problem.
Well, I'm about to save you a bunch of time spent on this issue, because last week I was chasing the same problem in a '06 LE and both fobs tested 100%.
I was just about to bite the bullet on the body control ECU when an identical car came in the shop for an engine swap. (rinky-dink SC dealer put 4cyl oil filter on a v6=ouch)
I borrowed the door control receiver out of it and programed it to the car.
From then on it worked everytime. So I ordered a new part ($568) , put it in and programed once more.
Now working like a new car. So there you go. The Door Control Receiver is a fault. Located in the pass side C-pillar. You can always try and find a used one but you never know.

Many thanks Tech1984 for the quick response. So it's the rear passenger side, plastic cover near the head rest? I was kinda hoping it wasn't the receiver. But since both remotes are having the same problem. The common denominator is the receiver.

I have a 2010 XLE and have found that with the cooler weather - even in an insulated garage - when I go to unlock the door it doesn't always recognize that I have a keyfob in my pocket until two or three retries later.

Am having the same issues when the car is running and my wife goes to open the passenger door... again it fails to recognize her keyfob that's in her purse.

Anyone else see these issues?

You are talking Smart Key. A whole different ball of wax. They do have their disadvantages.
Like rapid battery wear if too close to devices.
To name a few.
TVs and PC monitors
DVD units
Cordless phones and cell phones
Microwave ovens
Modems and certain lighting fixtures.
Have your smart key system checked at the dealer. More than likely the batteries are getting weaker.
