camry timing

hi people, just need a small bit of help if possible. have done a compete engine transplant on a camry 2.4 auto but when timing the chain back up i seem to have run into difficulty. on the exhaust camshaft there are 3 notches, one has IN, second is just a notch and the third has EX beside the notch. seeing as it was the exhaust cam i timed the chain up to the EX notch but it wont run with compression down on all cylinders so i assume the timing is wrong. can anybody tell me what mark i have to time the cam up to??

also if anybody needs assistance with doing the timing chain just ask as it is pretty straight forward (apart from the cam timig!!!)

Camry timing-2006 2az-fe

Hi,
I just posted an identical question to yours. Like you, I assumed the "E" mark on the sprocket was correct because the sprocket is on the exhaust valve camshaft, but the engine timing was wrong according to someone who would know-the engine turned over but wouldn't start. I believe the correct timing mark is the faint slot in between the "I" and the "E" but after all the internet searching I've done I still haven't found a definitive answer. By any chance, have you yet found the answer off the forum?

Thanks,
Lloyd

Well for the exhaust cam sprocket you line up the yellow timing chain tooth with the dot that imprinted into the gear, for the intake you line it up with the line that goes across the whole gear. Install the front cover and tensioner, turn over the engine twice set it back to TDC and make sure the cams line up with the marks on the cam caps and you should be good. Hope that help do at least 1 of these engine a month at work got it down like clock work

yes, there are 3 timing marks on the exhaust pulley and you need to use the line mark and not the dots. like you i assumed due it being the exhaust camshaft it should be timed at the E mark but it was wrong. no internal dameage when i turned it over.
