Speaker Distortion

Hi all, this is my first post but have been a member for a long while. I've searched high and low for any answers to the issue I've been having.

The issue is with my sound system. Initially when I start my car the sound out of the speakers is great after about 5-10mins the sound gets distorted and sounds like crap. Usually this will last about 20mins and then the sound will be fine after that the rest of the car or stereo system is on.

I have stock JBL system in an 05 Camry XLE no modifications, no subs, nothing. I changed out the JBL amp behind the glove box but that didn't make a difference. I read up on some other posts as that solved it for other people.

Any help or background info on this issue would be fantastic. I don't know if it's a common problem or not.

Thanks for anybody that can help in advance.

It sounds as if one of the components on the circuit board is failing or has what is called a 'cold solder joint' in which the solder connection is not clean, or is cracked, and the connection is not clean. As the temperature on the board varies, the component in question will work at variable rates and hence, the issue you hear. The solution is to a) pull the board and look for anything visually and fix it or b) replace the unit. Find someone in your area with good electronics knowledge and make him your best friend.

I was almost positive it was the amp but I just replaced it and have the exact same issue with the "new" one now. The odds of getting another amp with the exact same problem have to be pretty slim. I am however going to open up my "old" amp and look at the components as I'm pretty decent with a soldering iron.

Any other ideas that don't relate to the amp? I just don't want to go to a car audio place and have them tell me whats wrong for a crazy fee.

Thanks for all the help so far, much appreciated.

If you swapped out the amp and the problem remains the same, then forget it, that is not the problem. The amp is amplifying a problem from up stream, and that would be the head unit in the dash. Look for a bad joint on those boards or replace it with a junk yard unit to verify the problem lies there.

Sounds like something in the preamp section of your head unit is biting it.

Crap, I was hoping it wasn't going to be a problem with the head unit as I have the Navi HU - mega bucks to replace. ARG! Any ideas on where to find a gen 4 navi HU? Any particular user on the forums that would be a good source for used parts? (I think I have a gen 4 Navi - I have 2005 camry so gen 5.5)

Time to start the eBay search if not.

Thanks for your help guys.
