You may be right about opening the door too hard. A while back my wife mentioned the wind caught the door and yanked it out of her hand.

it keeps the door from opening up and touching your front fender. its a "door stop" of sorts. open your door, if it stops and does not continue to open it is not broken. i usually open my doors all the way, then i apply grease on that part. you have "rollers" inside that may just be in need of lubing. open and close the door several times after you lube this up, apply more grease if needed. typical yearly thing to do.
in fact, do not be afraid to grease up the hinges as well. use a small brush and jam that grease into those hinges. you could give it a shot oil, like motor oil, but that'll run down and drip over your rocker panel, making for a mess.
by the way, use "white" grease or "high temp" grease on that door stop. lube the "front side", and "back sides" only, as this is where the rollers contact, not the top or bottom.......
