Question Keys made for New Toyotas?

I had a guy at the dealership tell me that you can only get a key made at the dealer and it cost up to 300$??? It has the keyless entry on the key.

Anyone know different or somewhere else to get one done?

You need to check with your states automobile club.

Toyota Motor Corp. gives new owners detailed information in its manuals.
Since last fall, Toyota has begun to replace car computers without charge when necessary.
William Kwong, spokesman for Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc., said there isn’t much of a problem unless all the
keys are lost. Otherwise, he said, a dealer can make one for about $80.

Here in California:

Key Codes. SB 1542 gives motorists a convenient and secure option for
getting replacement keys when theirs have been lost, stolen, or damaged.
Automakers must provide, at any time, the key codes necessary for a
licensed and registered locksmith to make a replacement key for vehicles
sold or leased in California on or after January 1, 2008. Exceptions
include automakers that sell fewer than 2,500 vehicles annually, and
manufacturers that make their own keys -- i.e. BMW and Mercedes-Benz -- who
have until 2013 to comply with the law provided that, in the interim, they
send a replacement key by overnight mail.

It's the key blank and the programing that is the major cost factor. The key that has the remote as part of the key is $224.06 MSRP and anywhere from $50.00 on up to program them.

RIP OFF... That is why California has inacted a new state law requiring the codes be made available to independent locksmith who will charge you less, plus I have seen an online store that will sell you the blank with your code preprogramed if you give them your vin number, then you have the blank cut at any lock smith.

I asked my local locksmith and they charge a lot more than dealer and they recommended me to do it at the dealer.

Speaking of programming keys... how many keys can you register in the ECU? I heard that there is a maximum of 3 master keys and 1 valet? Is that right?

Buy a fob key off ebay and take it to the dealer to have it programmed it will be cheaper. I bought a switchblade key off ebay and the dealer charged me $45 to have it programmed.

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area AA Locksmith in Menlo Park will program and cut a key for $30.00, If you buy your own key with the remote built in they will program and cut that for $30.00 also. They can get the keys too but ebay is probably still cheaper
