Burning oil and error code P0420

I have an '03 Camry with 180,000 miles. It normally burned about a quart every 2500 miles, but then it suddenly started to burn a quart about every 1200 miles. It doesn't drop any on the driveway, and I can't smell any bad exhaust fumes, the car runs great, and there isn't any smoke.

Yesterday, the check engine light came on, and I took it to Autozone tonightand was given an error code P0420. I understand this is because of emissions. My question is, is this a problem I want to repair? Given it's burning oil, is it likely that the catalyst system will continue to foul?

Thanks very much.

My first guess is that the pvc valve is clogged, or sludge has blocked it inside the valve cover. Verify that the valve works and plow air into the pvc port/hole to verify it is not blocked.

If you keep burning oil like that, the cat will likely clog again.

Burning oil will most definitely cause the cat to fail after a period of time. If he was on his original converter however, it was due to fail anyway at that kind of mileage.
