Brake lights flashing and don't always turn on related to shifter stuck?

My roommate was behind me today on the drive to work and reported that my brake lights don't always turn on/flash when I let go. I have also occasionally had problems with the shifter not wanting to shift. Could this be related? Is there a common signal line that the brakes are depressed or do I only need to check the wiring to my lights? Anyone have any suggestions where to look?

i do believe the brake lights could be a part of the 4 ways flashers and turn signals, provided of course you do not have yellow lights in the back.

check all the fuses for brake lights, flashers, and tail lites.

check any connections that might be in the trunk area. look for a "connection block" in the trunk area, maybe it became disconnected.
