what's the difference between the jbl radio and non jbl radio? the reason i ask is because i want to buy another radio as a secondary one and paint the faceplate for it black. and replace the lights within it from the blu/green to red. is there an extra wire for the back of the jbl radio or something? if it's just the same radio then i'll buy one. i'm not worried about the 6 disc cd changer. just want to make sure i can still get the full benefit of my speakers and amp or whatever. thanks for any info or input.
non JBL has built in amp, connected directly to oem radio harness
JBL has a special wire harness routed from center console headunit to under passenger dash area, connect to an external JBL amp, then re-routed back to center console with a different wire harness specifically for matching JBL radio only.
when i had my i4 with non-JBL, it went up to 63 max
on my V6 with JBL, when its on 30, it was already lounder then the non-JBL!
Heh...my stereo goes up to 40 something. Normal listening is ~12-15. Anything above 20 is ridiculous...
The JBL stereo has an external amplifier either located under one of the chairs or inside the dash somewhere. The standard stereo has the power amp inside the stereo itself.
The JBL amp enables the stereo to output more power per channel so it should be clearer at higher volumes. Additionally, the JBL amp outputs 8 distinct channels for 8 drivers from a crossover located on the amp. The standard stereo outputs 4 channels; the front speakers only use a filter cap on the tweeters to prevent the low freqs from being output on those since low freqs can burn it.

63 is good when its nice outside and you put your windows down and have poeple in your car!

It's impossible to compare volumes because most of you use "ASL" and the audio sources can vary and are unequalized.
If I turn ASL on for example, the car becomes intolerable in the 30s. Otherwise, I run 40s on the highway. Nothing comes close to the volume of my exhaust though, which is a steady "60" on the highway heh.

^ Yeah if you want to broadcast your music.
I turn mine to 20-24aux. WITH MY IPOD @ 90% VOLUME. It's a nice "in-your-face-bass" but not enough to make you want quiet time or anything. Perfect cruising/driving volume. I don't wanna ruin my eardrums with the bass waves bouncing around the car or broadcast my music cause not everyone appreciates trance/techno/hiphop/heavy metal like i do.

Stereo volume is on a different scale, duh! Can you believe that stereos used to only go up to 10?!?!?!? And then someone came up with the idea of putting an 11!!!
Hopefully your stereo isn't distorting at 63. The speakers may die quickly.

wow 63? that's loud. i have ASL turned off i have to really mess with the sounds. highest i go is like 34 but that's because i lower the sound on my ipod sincce that's what i use the most. i noticed ipod max with system volume hear crackling and stuff but that was on my old lexus. that taught me though just to keep the ipod volume itself at like 50% and then turn it up through the head unit.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm thinking of upgrading my head unit. Right now the bass in my car is incredibly loud - I even have it and the treble turned to "0"!. I was wondering if I have the JBL audio, but I haven't had a chance to go looking for an amp. My ASL is on Mid.
Any ideas? Does the number below the volume/power button mean anything? Mine is 11(forgot 3rd number)83, I think.

check under passenger seat to see if the amp is there or on the front of the radio lower left corner it says JBL best way for you to see if you have it or not.
Also JBL i believe is 8 speakers as opposed to 6 non JBL. 8 > 6 right? lol
If you have a non JBL then the amp won't be present under the passenger seat floor area. If you have the JBL it will be there, but if you have a non then you can't upgrade it without the wireharness to plug the amp up too. Non JBL cars don't have it, and the JBL stereos are technically 8 speaker vs non 6 speakers.
