Is the trip computer accurate on fuel consumption?

The L/100km data I got on my 2008 Camry is ~3L higher than normal value (from redbook). I haven't had time to test the real consumption yet. I use #98 fuel and drive smoothly in good traffic without air con.

Normally can the trip computer be trusted?

On my 08 TCH, it's 1.5 - 2.5 MPG 'optimistic' (reads high, indicating lower consumption), i.e. in-car shows 43, miles/gallons works out to 41.
