5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have owned the Camry SE V6 for a month now. Just curios about the noise it makes until it warms up. Is it normal for this thing to sound like a diesel until its warmed up? Man you can really hear it inside the car if the radio is not on. My 92 Mr2 is quiet like a mouse compared to this car. Even my 2002 3/4 ton Chevy with the 6.0 liter is quieter and the piston slap from that truck goes away quicker. I went to the stealership and when the recalls were done, I got the old famous "its normal". Anyway read on here that some of you have it. Does it get worse with age? I only have 22K on it now. What do you guys think???
well, my always make a noise but sounds likes your is really loud, the dealers will always say its normal, you need to tell them they really need to look into it! thats what i do until they fix it

Yeah you can hear it from inside the car, just like some of the videos on Youtube. Not as noisy as the ES350, but you can hear it. The noise goes away after warm, the stealership said it was normal and they heard it. I had the VVTI oil line recall done, the car had sat for 2 hours and it was about 38 degrees when the adviser heard it. He said it was normal, and told me he has heard louder. Kinda dissapointed about it, I would expect more from toyota... I know you guys all said the same. So does everybody have this problem or just a few? and does anybody know how many Camrys came with the V6? Especially the SE model just curios. Other then this I love the car, the fit and finish is good, some cheap materials being used here, but alot of new cars are like this. So far in the city I have got 22-24 mpg. Not bad very happy with the power, it will outrun my MR2. Does anybody have a high milaege V6 Camry with the engine knock as well? Just wanting to now what to expect as this car ages. Its replacing the Mr2 sad to have to let my Mister 2 go. but I need rooom for my daughter and my car just was not big enough...
mine is I4,but was kind loud to when cold.
switched to 5-30 oil (0-20 spec.) car much quiter now.

Mine has 67K on it and like all the others, it's loud in the morning. It does go away within a few miles. I did quiet it down slightly by going to 5-30 Mobil 1. Of course that does not help with piston slap, only heat takes that away. The synthetic does quiet down the valvetrain slightly though. It's worth a try anyway.

The noise is you hear is probably normal from a cold start. I have an 09 V6 and I can hear it from inside the car in the morning. The real test is whether you can hear it from the outside of the car. I worried about it until I did the following:
1) Let car sit overnight in 30 degree weather.
2) Have neighbor start car in the morning - warm up only 10 seconds and drive it.
What did I hear that sounded abnormal from outside the car? Nothing, zero, NADA - thus I quit worrying about it. This is unlike the "deisel" Lexus engines that are posted on youtube and discussed in the Lexus forums.
I would say if you hear nothing from the outside of the car, don't worry about it. If the engine sounds abnormal from outside the car ...... audio tape it and play it for the dealer. It takes several hours normally for the engine to get cold enough to make the piston slap sound.
Good luck and with such low mileage ..... make sure you follow the six month oil change rule even if your car doesn't have 5,000 miles on it. Also, make sure you use 5W30 oil as recommended in the owner's manual and on the oil cap. Don't let anyone talk you into using 5W20 or 0W20 oil.
[My 09 LE has 28,000 miles and uses zero oil between changes and has always gotten incredibly good gas mileage. I use 93 (vs 91 or 92) Octane now that I have moved from Kansas to Florida and my last tank was 29 mpg 70% city/30% highway.]

Yes my wife drove it the other morning from a cold start. You can hear it from the driveway when she left. But I dont hear it at an idle when sitting. I spoke with Toyota and was told that if it clears up when warm, then they wont do a thing. It does clear up when the car is warmed up though. No burning oil, and I am very picky about maintance so the car will get the oil changed as you said and with 5W30. I have not spoken with the previous owner, but it was a retired female driver. I had some of thereords. The car was serviced on a regular basis, they took excellent care of it. Toyota also tried to play it off as loud injectors ect.. My mechanic said that he heard numerous 2GRs make this noise until warm. Funny that Chevy Silverados was known for it, they called them slaperados. My 2000 1/2 ton 5.3 had it really bad, but my 2002 3/4 ton with the 6.0 is pretty quiet.
