I have a problem that I'm trying to solve. No one I know, including the guys at the NAPA dealer, have ever seen this.
10k miles or so ago (dunno exact number) the front brakes on my 2007 Camry v6 developed a shake, especially at speed. I assume it was the normal "Camrys eat rotors etc." problem.
1. I got 2 NAPA Gold rotors
2. I got 2 sets of NAPA ceramic pads
3. Installed everything with no big problems, all properly greased with NAPA silicone silicone lubricant.
Maybe 2k miles later on a walkaround while filling up the gas tank, I noticed that when looking through the front left wheel I could see that the anti-squeal shim on the outside brake pad HAD MOVED. One of the tabs holding it in place had bent and the shim had moved an inch or so. I knew it would not fix it permanently, but that weekend I took that pad off, moved the shim, and bent the tab back in place over the pad.
A week or 2 later, I noticed that that shim had moved again (expected) and that the RIGHT outside pad's shim had moved. Within a week that one had moved enough that it was scratching the right rotor hub. NAPA had never seen that before, but gave me new pads no question asked and I put 'em in that weekend.
Now, several thousand miles later, the left outside pad's anti-squeal shim has moved AGAIN. The right one is still OK for now.
Anyone seen this before? Any ideas on what could cause it? My big problem is that it's no longer 50 or 60 degrees outside. It's 10 degrees. NAPA's lifetime warranty gets me replacement pads, but doesn't get me someone to do the work for me (I haven't escalated yet or made any attempt to get anything from NAPA).
Are the rotors out of round? If they are, they would tend to push the caliper piston back more than normal and so doing allow a little room back in there for the shim to move around. With a true rotor, this shouldn't happen because there isn't enough room to move.

The rotors were brand new the first time this happened (installed along with new pads) and as of now, with the shim issue happening a 2nd time, they have less than 5k on them.
remove the shims. you dont have to use them.
I never used them and never will.
p.s. got napa rotors too, wagner thermoquiet pads,no shims.

You don't have to use the shims. Even the OEM Akebono's aftermarket stick-on shims move. IMO all aftermarket shims stink. That's why I always remove them no questions asked, unless they are riveted on there.
If you absolutely have to have shims, then pay the $10 per corner to get OEM shims. The material is harder and shouldn't shift like this. I'm not sure about the latest ones of course. Maybe they stink too.

These have ceramic particles in them, so I personally won't use them as caliper assembly lube. But these are good on anchor pins and the back of the pads where the piston and caliper contact the pads.
Let us know how it turns out. You might also want to check out Centric C-Tek or Premium (powder coated hubs) in the future, with Akebono ProAct pads.
