5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently test drove a 2005 Camry LE (4-Cyl), and from behind the wheel the engine seemed considerably louder than the 2002 Camry LE (4-cyl) that I own. Has anyone else observed this or is this an isolated case? I've searched Google and I found only one thread on another forum that was similar.
This is a photo of the engine from the car I test drove. I think it looks wonky with that big rusted manifold-like device....comments anyone?
that's NORMAL....its the exhaust manifold....unless a manifold were to be ceramic coated or chromed like a set of headers, get used to the rusted look..

isn't it should have cover?

My 05 has a heat shield over the exhaust manifold.
As for the sound, maybe the carpet was taken out sometime. I had flooding problems in my car and had to take out the passenger side carpet and you could hear everything...

my '10 has one, my dad's '00 has one.....my buddies '09 has one.......
so i kinda think they all have them from the factory, what happens after that, is anyone's guess.
I work in the auto service bizz and often notice differences in engine and other noises within generations and powertrains of most cars. I divide noise into intrusive and transmitted groups. Intrusive noise is sound coming into the interior through sealing gaps in body, door. window, cable and control openings, etc.. Transmitted noise includes road and tire rumble and engine/transmission sounds coming from the body structure. Toyota cars, on average have very low levels of intrusive noise and usually low transmitted noise levels. The condition of the engine and exhaust mounts are a big factor in transmitted powertrain noise. As mounts age, their ability to damp certain engine vibration frequencies is lost. Differing driving styles will affect the performance of the mounts over time. As an example, we recently had a 2001 Maxima with one broken engine mount. Replacing it took care of the thumping noise the customer had. The car still had a "roughness" to it that the customer was bothered by. Replacing the other mounts, even though they were not broken, totally cured it.
Well, I test drove another 2005 Camry and a couple 2004's and they were just a quiet as my 2002. I guess this was an isolated incident, but needless to say, I'm not purchasing this particular car.

Thanks for chiming in.
Just saw this thread. That's good to hear you're not buying that '05!
I used to drive an '02, my wife still drives her '05. The '05 was always quite a bit quieter (and smoother) than my '02 on the highway. The '02 I traded in about 7 mos ago for current '09 . The '05 drives a just a bit smoother than my '09 actually.
