Have map lights come on.

Ive read some other threads about getting the map lights to come on with the dome light when the door is opened on my 03 Camry, but I'm not understanding how. I pull my dome light and ran wires to my map light wires, it just blew the fuse. Why doesn't it work this way, and also my dome light has 3 wires where as the map lights only have 2. I'm wanting to replace the lights with LEDs, but want to get this working first, any ideas?
