2004 bat light on and off

father in law is in from buffalo. it is a 2004 camry, auto, 4 cyl, 110k miles. his battery light comes on occasionally for the last 3 weeks. AAA had been out an tested it a few weeks ago and said it was fine. he says it does not make any noise ie. squeling etc. the power steering is fine and when the light comes on he does not notice anything unusual. He cant remember if the belt has been changed but i know he brings it to toyota for regular maintenance as needed. any ideas what the issue might be? ..thanks for any feedback

Battery cables could be lose or corroded.
Lose alternator belt.
If not those, I would have the alternator tested.

+1 Sounds like the alternator might be on it's way out.

thanks for the reply's.....alternator does sound like the most logic solution. I assume that when the AAA guy went out he checked the cables. the father in law thought he did. the AAA guy also tested the bat and alternator and said they were fine. the Bat lite was off when he tested it.. maybe if the bat lite stays on we can test it again.......I few more questions...........is the Goodyear Gatorback the recommended serp belt as in most aplications and what is the recomedned replacemnt alternator? what is the oem alt?.....TIA

I got to go finish shoveling my 16" inches snow

Replacing a belt by using the parts' store number can be a crap shoot. For the little difference, buy the belt at Toyota and you know you have the right fitment. That presupposes that the belt needs to be replaced. If the belt looks good, try a little Belt Ease to prevent it from slipping. I suspect this is not the problem though because it would be more consistent, and the alternator must just about stop spinning before it drops enough voltage to allow the light to come on. If the battery cables were loose the whole car would shut down, not just the alternator. My guess is that you have a diode on the alternator circuit board that is going south or perhaps the solder has come loose--a cold solder joint in the business. If the engine is running, the idiot light is on, and the alternator is still generating about 14 volts, then the issue is the diode allowing electricity to flow back through the idiot light. This is not convenient but the car will continue to work. The fix is to replace the diode or replace the alternator. Diodes are cheaper than alternators.

I replaced my belt about a year and a half ago due to squealing on cold starts which would go away after a few seconds. I tried the belt spray but, it only worked for a few days. I purchased my Dayco replacement belt from Advanced Auto. It is the same brand as the original Toyota belt, it just doesn't say Toyota on it, while the Toyota belt did say Dayco on it. It cost less, fit well and I haven't had a problem since.

I told him to go to Toyota across the street from me but the "Brother inlaw" sent him to some big hack tow company that sucks.......they replaced the alternator for somewhere between $400-$500..........I had looked on rockauto.com and they had a Denso for $250.......I am not sure what the OEM is..............the wife said the car was still making a funny noise.......I hope he didn't get some crummy Chinese alt.......thanks again for the help........
