Hello everyone.
I let my brother drive my car today and when someone cut him off he slammed the brakes. The brakes and steering wheel locked up and he could not control the vehicle. He went over a curb and into two light poles, thus totaling my car. Would I be able to call Toyota and ask if this was an incident because of the recall or no? I already took the car in twice for the floor mat adjustment and the computer being reprogrammed. I am sad that my 07 Camry got totaled and even the air bags deployed.
No offense to you at all but this sounds like a driver error. The 07 has ABS so as long as that abs light wasn't on prior to the incident then the ABS system was fully functional. The car actually preforms a self check of the system at every start up. Sounds like you brother either panicked and pumped the brakes (which is a no no with abs) or just thought they locked up and panicked. And no, you cant try and screw Toyota over by claiming it was their fault when clearly it had nothing to do with an accelerator issue.

Thank you guys. I thought as much but I was told to check into it. I knew some people on this forum would be straight up with me and tell me. Thanks a lot guys.
My insurance said if its total, they will pay the bank and I get nothing out of it besides maybe a thousand or two.
Agree with above posters. I regularly see these types of crashes, and it's generally always driver error. It would take a lot of work to have the vehicle indepentantly inspected to determine IF it was a Toyota issue; probably more work than just paying the insurance deductable and getting a new car. Since your brother was driving, if he has his own insurance, you might consider filing the claim with his insurance company instead.
It was filed with my insurance company USAA. Now I have to go out there and get a new car again. Only had this Camry for 1 yr and 3 months. It was spotless as I took care of it. Went on road trips to California, Nevada, and Arizona. Was suppose to move to Miami, FL in March but now I will have to spend my relocation money on a new car.

Well ... when your on the brakes, you cant really steer hence why you always brake before a turn and never in the turn.
As for the brakes locking up, how can you prove that? Was there solid tire skid marks down the road?
Honestly, just go through insurance, everyone has it for a reason, whether it be someone elses fault or your own, accidents happen.
CamrySExxx, you are so right. I am just going through my insurance. They said, "It should be resolved in 2 weeks to 3 weeks tops." I hope I at least receive a couple thousand, so I can use it for a down payment and pitch in some more money.

Don't buy another gen 6, the gen 7 is coming out soon.
I kind of do not want to buy a car anymore. I might get a used Toyota for like 5k to 8k and just pay cash for that. If not I will just go live in Germany for a year and just take the trains to get around.
None of us are there to witness the brakes and steering. And like others said, it's easy for an individual just to work with the insurance company.
But if your brother's description is accurate, then it's safety hazard, so file a complaint with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
and see if they can do what they do to help find some answers to your questions about what happened. There is even a toll-free number to call.

Somewhat related, my steering has locked up before, but it's mainly driver error. Quick lane changes at slow speed while accelerating/decelerating (quick left then right jerk, etc) will lock up the wheels and really require some elbow grease to get you where you need to be. Might be a similar concept in your case.

Thanks JohnGD. I will tell my brother about this. I am going through the insurance and have to be patient for like 2 to 3 weeks tops.
I think its driver error as well based on what most individual's have posted. Like you were saying 11LE. The wheels have never locked on me before and I have driven my car for like 40,000 miles. I take it on thick ice when I go snowboarding, I never slam the breaks though, just enough to stop the car enough.

Sounds like a power steering pump issue. Check your fluid. If the fluid is good then you might need a new pump soon.
