5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My wifes car is a 2005 Camry XLE-V6, which I have assumed has the ECT. Has around 92k miles. We bought it at around 80k. Ever since it has had a hard shift at most times, depending on how driven. If I punch it, oddly enough it shifts smoother usually. Otherwise, its hard, sometimes shift takes long if that makes sense, sounds like its going to slip, but doesn't and shifts. I've read this is due to ECT. I do NOT have an ECT off button. Any suggestions?
I've taken to the dealer and they say its fine, flushed tranny for me but thats it, and it had no improvement. Warranty is out soon and I am not sure what to do. Do I need to take a hard stance with the dealer to find something wrong with it?
Thanks.
Yeah, it sounds about normal considering that year's transmission. It usually happens when your foot fluctuates a little on how far youre pressing the gas, right?
From what I read in the past, it's possible to have the ecu reflashed or something to try to fix that, but from other's experiences, it just came back. I think it's just a characteristic of this 5 speed auto
I find it happening to my Gen6.5 also.. If I floor it and let off a bit or mess around with the gas (i.e. not keeping it floored) the upshift comes in at an awkward time..
Believe it's normal.

If you have the latest programming update and new fluid in there, then there is probably nothing more the dealer can do. If it's internal problems like shift solenoids and valve bodies, I doubt the dealer is going to do anything unless there are MIL codes set.
Yeah, the newer Aisin U-series transmissions are unfortunate clunkers compared to older A-series.

I'd let the dreaded dealer do this, just to make sure it's done. Maybe they already flashed the ECU? See if you can get it covered under warranty. No sense flashing it twice if it's a valve body problem.

its at about 62k so its out of warranty ........ the service history doesnt show a reflash, just a fluid change at 30k and i changed the fluid recently adding some lucas too..... the lucas helped with some shift quality but its still not right
There are a number of problems with the U-series. Without knowing for sure it would be a waste of money just to get a reflash, because it may not fix the problem. For example, the U140 (possibly U240) series have a fluid circuit design defect that causes two gears to be engaged at the same time. And you can't fix that with software.
Hard downshifts or flare on light acceleration may be a partial lock-up torque converter clutch control valve problem. But people have been having problems without any MIL light. The 07 V6 Camry's U660E even flares fresh out of the factory. IMO real junk.
Hey, maybe a manual swap?

thnx..... i was thinking of just flushing it and changin the filter..... and hope it doesnt break during my ownership..... which will probly be a long time, im takin this thing to 200k+
That's a good idea. 3 drains/refills with a short run in between should put mostly new ATF in there.
If your model uses T-IV ATF, then use a decent ATF like Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF. Walmart's SuperTech Mercon-V is T-IV suitable too. Valvoline MaxLife should be fully synthetic by now but the new formulation is thinned out for Dexron-VI and WS applications.
Yes, a new filter and clean the pan. Hopefully it helps.
