5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
It's me again, posting threads before I make decisions on upcoming things to play with Camry. Anyone have issues with subs in the trunk? Does the trunk rattle a lot?
What's your setup like? I have the JBL stock speakers too, don't know whether to replace them or not.
yes every car you install a sub in the trunk will rattle, i applied sound dampilifier in the trunk, front doors, and the rear deck panel. The rear deck panel will rattle like a mofo, ask anyone on here that has a system in their camry and its the most annoying noise ever! lol i created my own system and i love it.
This is a video of my system this was taken during the summer time since then i got a new double din which is the pioneer one listed in my sig, if you take a look at my cardomain you can see the sub and stuff. You also gotta know what your doing to install a system otherwise you will mess something up. lol I applied second skin dampilifier on all the areas i stated above.

lol yeah, i did my install myself. So you have the jbl speakers with the amp in your car? Mine was just the regular speakers, so i replaced the front with some good components 6.5" and amped them and the back i switch out too but just kept them hooked up to the hu, no amp since the fronts are more important. Yeah i applied second skin dampilifier, its sort of like dynamat but imo is better. The decrease the rattling alot, esp in the rear deck was the most annoying plastic slapping sound. lol
Yeah depending on how much power you plan on adding, it will vibrate and rattle, its the nature of the beast. You can use dyna-mat or others and this will help but won't eliminate it. There are ways to stop most of it though, you just have to be creative about it and be willing to put that work into it. Good luck though I hope it goes well for you.
Regarding the subs, that's what I DON'T want my car to sound like. It rattles way too much. You didn't try anything to reduce that a bit? Such as damplifying the trunk?
i reduced my rattling alot by the dampilifier, its more of a solid rattling then a wreckless loose slapping noise now if that makes any sense. lol I applied it on the trunk lid and the qtr panels in the trunk too. you can hear in my video above.
Yea there is a point to adding sound deadening products. It helps reduce rattles.. also help with bass response.
Vibration = energy loss. The power that should be going into the speaker converted to sound is now loss to vibration. For all you know your amp could be clipping and you wouldnt even know. My buddy thought his system was hooked up and properly adjusted until he did his whole trunk only to find out the clipping.
i have a powered 8" sub in my trunk with kenwood 6 1/2 door and 6x9 deck speakers and custom fitted tweeters on the dash cuz the original ones fell apart...... i only get a slight rattle from the deck when its cranked up with certain bass tones..... no dyna mat or anything
Alright so I've gotten mixed reviews. Don't know whether to spray that noise reduction and apply that damplifier stuff to reduce vibrations. It may be necessary in the trunk.
Anyone suggest changing my JBL stock speakers/tweaters?
Here are my suggestions, you will hear different ones from everyone.
Get a nice set of component speakers, you can either mount the tweeters in the factory location for a stealth install or have them else where such as your sail panels. The factory location does a good job, good imaging. BUT if you take this route you will need to power them with an amplifier. Get a decent one that can give what the speakers need or even a bit MORE than what it needs. If you take this route, I would REALLY recommend to dynamat or use an equivalent alternative to deaden the door. Really helps with getting all the bass form the speakers that you paid for.
If you just want a sub, get the combo sub/amp you want. Dynamat is not NECESSARY, but it would improve the sound. You can get away without it ... The bare minimum if you take this path would be to dynamat your license plate and trunk lid. If you want to go over kill you can do the whole trunk including spare tire well. Undernearth the rear deck etc. A lot of vibrations come from that area since you have a plastic deck right above the subs. You can always go with other roofing products such as peel and seal, it does the same shit ... might smell like tar for a bit but it goes away. If you install it properly on a properly prepped surface it should last . I did hear if you put a layer ONTOP of an existing layer, than it will be more prone to peeling. Im going to grab a few rolls of this stuff once i head to the states in two weeks since its impossible to find locally.
ps. It all depends on what you want. If you want better sound quality and better music go wit the components, if you want bass just throw some subs in ... just dont be those idiots who blast their music with their trunk ratteling like crazy, all you hear is BASS no music... and the worse part is these kids claim to have 1000w subs and 1000w amps ... when in reality their configuration gives them 200wrms and they have the gain on full...
