Power steering Return hose leaks

I have a 2002 Camry XLE that has a fluid leak at the joint of Power steering fluid Reservoir and its connected Return Hose. It is not dripping but wet joint and level of fluid is going down.

I took it to the local Toyota dealership, they want to replace the whole hose and charge me about $300. When I look at it, it can be solved with a clamp to tighten it very well. The stock clamp is like a clip not the one with screws to tighten it.

Is it necessary to replace the whole hose?

Is it possible to get a clamp for it?

Anybody has any experience in dealing with it, which way I have to go with it.

Thanks.

From the dealer's quote, I would say you are talking about the supply hose to the pump. The return hose to the reservoir is the smaller hose. You can probably find a hose at one of the on line Toyota parts houses and install it yourself. The hose is probably hardening. I think the OEM clamps are better than the replacement type. You might try relocating the existing clamp slightly until you can replace the hose. It has been my experience that the only way to fix the problem is too replace the hose. If you do replace the hose yourself, use a metric flare nut wrench made for this application and don't overtighten the connection. An alternative would be to take the hose to a parts house that makes hoses for industrial applications. They can identify the type of fitting and possibly make you a replacement. The only problem here is the replacement will not have the formed in bend necessary to connect to the pump ,but if they make the hose somewhat longer, it may work. $300 seems like way too much for this repair.See what an independent wants. Yes it is the smaller hose and asking around $300 to replace the full return hose line.

As for the hose, it has metal tube. Are you talking about replacing the whole hose line or only the rubber hose connected to the metal tube and the reservoir?

I see a clamp for 99 cents at O'Reilly. This kind is enough to tighten the connection, Isn't it?

The Return hose form the Reservoir to another pipe that eventually goes to the rack and pinion. The hose that comes off the reservoir that your are talking about is part# 44406-06100 and has an MSRP of $86.94.

I do sell Genuine Toyota OEM parts to TN members for 30% off MSRP and I only charge actual shipping costs plus $2.00 for materials, etc. Should you want to purchase an OEM hose, at least you have an option.

Below is a link to an illustration so you can see all the hoses in the power steering system.

If you can't get it to open, email me at garys@toyotaofnewnan.com and I will be more than happy to send you a .pdf file of it.

Good luck

I have a similar problem on a 2007 Toyota Camry. The return hose is wet but not dripping. Photo link below:

I guess replacing the hose and maybe the clamps would solve the problem. Correct?

Replace the hose and use the original clamp.

I didn't replace the hose. I bought that 99 cents clamp and tighten it next to the original clamp. Leave that original clap as it is, it doesn't matter. There is no leak as of today.

Any leaks since? I'm due for an inspection this month, but have had a slow leak since last summer. I'm hoping the $1 clamp would fix the problem. THANK YOU for posting!!

hehe whatever works. But if you need bulk hose try NAPA and ask for ATF hose otherwise ATF can eat out generic rubber hoses after a while.

As of today there is no leaks at all. It has been one year now.

If you ask any car mechanic or dealership, they never do it and never advise the way I did it. They are in the business of making money for their own life. Look at on this thread itself, and they are suggesting replacing the hose so that they can sell the parts to make some money.

When you buy a clamp, get a correct size for that hose diameter. Don't use an oversized clamp.

Also, when you tighten it, don't tighten it too much to avoid any damage to the hose. Start with just enough force with your three fingers on the screw driver. Then clean that area dry to see any leaks later. Check again after one week drive. If there is any leak, tighten it by a half turn and check again later.

In my case, the first time I tightened it was enough to stop the leak.

I can’t help to get into some other subject here:

A car mechanic and dealerships are like a doctor and a hospital. If you go to a doctor with some problem, they will do all the unnecessary test and procedure on us to collect maximum money from the insurance, even if they know that it is a simple thing.

I have few incidents with them.

1. When I had a pain in my ear, I went to one specialist. First they did a hearing test. Then the doctor looked into my ear with a Scope. When I said I have pain along the skin area, he said, oh, we have to look inside your throat to see what is going on there. I was afraid of any hearing loss, so I agreed. Then the nurse did a local anaesthesia through my nose and he put a Scope through my nose all the way down to my throat. I suffered through that procedure and couldn’t speak to the doctor for the next five minutes until the effect of that anaesthesia went away.

He couldn’t find anything wrong. I suggested that it maybe an ear infection why don’t you give me an antibiotic. Then he gave me the prescription and my pain went away. It happened about 15 yrs ago and I have no problem with my ear until today. A normal healthy man with normal hearing and eye sight!

He collected about $750 from my visit to prescribe an antibiotic. Basically, he exploited my ignorance about that subject and used the usual fear tactics to cave me into his suggestive procedures.

2. I had a wart on my forearm about 25 yrs ago. I went to a doctor, he said, no problem we can take it out. I asked him what procedure? He said it is better to take off the wart by a surgery. I told him why don’t you use liquid nitrogen to freeze it? He said that it will come back again. So, I caved into his method. He made an incision and took off the flesh. Then he put three stitches. He collected some money out of that procedure and left a scar on my arm. After few years it came back again. I went to a dermatologist. I explained to her what the other guy did and she laughed. She sprayed the liquid nitrogen, that’s all she did and it has gone.

3. I had a pimple on my back exactly on the vertebrae. I can’t reach my both hands to squeeze it. It had been itching for months and I had been scratching it like a monkey. Finally, I went to the same dermatologist in the above incident. The nurse said, it has to be removed through a surgery and then need few stitches that they can’t do it there. The doctor came and she said the same. I suggested making a hole with a needle to squeeze out the pus. Then she said it will not remove completely; it will come back again. I said, why don’t we try it since I have done it on other parts of body where my hands can reach. She laughed and looked at me, finally she agreed and did it. She charged her consultation fee of $90 and $50 for the procedure.

I have no problem from that as of now. It has been about 7 yrs.

There are lots of things like this in our life can be solved by very simple approach. But the professionals never suggest the simple way. They always try to make a silly thing into a complicated procedure to collect more money.

Anyhow, please let me know how that goes with that clamp fix... You don't need to remove the old clamp, just slide it to the end closer to the reservoir.
