Just wondering if you own a V6 that has the cold start tap till it warms up or still stays after its warmed up then please reply with miles on car. I was speaking with a friend of mine who owns one as well and was wondering how long these engines will last with the constant tapping in the engine. Mine goes away when warm and has 23K on it now, 07 model SE. His has 37K loud tapping and sounds like a diesel Jetta still after its warmed up...(Toyota says Normal).........
I had an '07 with 68k and it was loud, not loud enough to hear inside either but louder than my buddy's of the same. It was always loud though, after investigating the noise I chalked it up to being the injectors and nothing more. My '11 purrs like a kitten though, it never bothered me once I found out what it was. Same with others at work, some are louder than others, I can only blame mass production. I don't think it will effect the reliability any though, as mine ran tops all the way to the 68k marker.
Well you have 24 valves on the V6 with something like .010 average clearance between the cam lobes and the lifters so there is going to be some noise even when the engine is at normal operating temperature. The remedy is replacing the shims between the lifters and the cam lobes. Now that looks like one big pain in the butt. I remember the older OHV V8s that used solid lifters ran clearances in the .015 range and were very noisy. Thank you members.
I understand about the many uses of this engine, I am just asking how many miles are on those who have the tick, tap, click ect.. whatever its called.
Forever, from day 1. I have 50K miles on mine but every 2GR-FE on the road will have this. They range in I'm sure 0 - 150+ k miles. It's a cheap econo engine really. One reason not to get a Lexus ES lol, you're still getting a cheap Toyota mass produced engine. Need to get to the DI V6s and V8s really.
Yes, very interesting read and help from each of you. I guess that I am used to my quiet MR2 that I had prior to my Camry. I had a pristine condition 92, gosh I really hated to sell that car, I owned it for 11 years and never an issue. However family grows so hence the Camry. I just expected it to be like my wifes 92 camry that we gave to my parents. It has over 200k and still runs like a champ. This car needs to last so that I can give it to my daughter in years to come. I really love this car, glad to have bought it. I guess I had expected it to be quiet and not so noisy, I believe that mine quiets down when warm...LOL on the Lexus ES..your right my friend, I would be upset that my lexus had this noise. My wifes 2001 RX300 is quiet as a mouse, 110K on it and runs like the first day of ownership. Anybody ever see the 3.5 2GR-Fe torn down yet? Would like to see one inside if anybody has the link..Anyway thanks for all the responses thus far..
