5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have been curious to know why most of you on chose the Camry to mod? We at Toyota are often told that the median age for Camry is 45-62yrs so it suprised me to see so many of you are younger that own them and the exceptional pride you all have taken to modify and make them your own. I just wondered with all the Honda's, BMW's, Subaru's, etc. and the limited aftermarket items available compared to the others, why you chose Camry. It excites me to know what is out there by looking, at what all I can tell, that you guys have done, I too want to get mine like some of yours. I have a family to support and other priorities so it will be slow go here, I will eventually get her there, and I tell others at work to check out this site just to see what you all have done. Gives us a good feeling reading the comments you have made about your toyota's and too we look at the problems you have (rattles, gaps, fitment issues) and see if there are any changes that can be made so that other future owners don't encounter them. Being in the assembly area I can't help with powertrain issues (stripped bolts, gaskets, etc.) but I do relay them to a friend in the department.
Again, I am just curious on why you chose the Camry, some of the special mods you did to make yours "yours". Thanks again for having me here and I look forward to seeing more and reading more on your vehicles, simply amazing.

1) it's much cheaper to mod and maintain a camry than a lexus, bmw, infinity, acura...or "if a mod goes wrong..I did not ruin a 50k+ car"
2) needed a family ride aka four doors, some trunk, more than average legroom, and some good reliability was a must
3) based on the above criteria - the camry V6 xle was the best choice for me and is a good looking base car for some mod's
4) main wish - rear wheel drive and more hp
Plus insurance, gas, maintenance, parts are cheap for a Camry compared to bimmers, mercs, and other sports cars.
And please, no more cheap interior plastics and maybe a better design. I kinda like the new accord's interior... more of a luxury you know, or maybe it's just me?
1. Owned Camrys before this, great luck with both
2. Needed a comfortable A-->B car with 5-speed and reasonable pep
3. Not looking to go mod-crazy, just to set mine apart from the average LE, plus my father has an '07 SE V6 if I need to feel power lol
4. Seconded on the interior. Markedly cheaper materials than my 87 or my 95.

Basically my family has always loved Toyota's their reliable and if something goes wrong it doesn't cost that much to fix compared to a bmw, mercedes, audi, and etc, plus the insurance is cheaper. My dad owns a 02 camry, i have a 09 camry, and my mom just recently bought a 2011 highlander, she loves it, besides for the dash feeling like cheap plastic and you can't wipe it clean with interior cleaner. lol
I also have always driven camry's i'm 24 and my first car was a 91 camry, 99 camry, and now 09 camry. I also find it easy to do mods as it's easy to take stuff apart for instance like taking apart the dash/door panels/rear panels/ to install my stereo system was easy as pie.
I agree on the interior they should have made it better, and not like cheap plastic, although i do like the dashboard material in my camry its like soft material, its not like in my mom's 2011 highlander. The rear panel is just annoying because its made out of plastic, overall they should have used better materials. If you touch it with something sharp by accident like the door interior you scratch it and sometimes it turns white. Especially in the cold it rattles like a mofo.
Overall i like my Camry and its not failed on me once and i love the size of it, its just right. i do wish i would have gotten a v6 instead though to get more power, because if the car is full and plus i have my sub/sub box in the trunk it feels like i'm not moving anywhere. haha
Modding never crossed my mind when I purchased my car. Like Tobeit, my main focus when looking into a car was needing "a family ride aka four doors, some trunk, more than average legroom, and some good reliability was a must".
Its after I purchased and got the keys to the car that I wanted to mod it to make it stand out from the rest of the Camry's on the road. Majority of the mods I have done is mainly functionality over looks such as brighter trunk with my cathode kit, weathertech floorliner, led lights, retrofit, strut bars and tints.
The modding scene for Camry's wasn't always that big. I think with the 6th gen. Toyota finally designed a Camry (family sedan) that was already very good looking in its own right, and things picked up from there. The Camry is by far one of Toyota's most successful designs to date.

But I think your question is why buy a Camry if you're going to be modding your car? I think most people bought the car for other reasons and then realized how utterly common they are in stock form, so feels the need to differentiate a little.
