they use world standard tranny fluid now and they last long time. you can't really check it but there's a 21mm-or-so cap to fill it and you can stick your finger inside and check

My dad's Avalon has a trans. pan gasket leak. I need to replace the gasket, but I don't want to destroy the transmission by not doing the fill/drain procedure correctly.

The 08 has the Aisin U660E 6-speed, and the 07 has the U151E and a dipstick!
But both should have the felt filter replaced say 30-50K miles and the pan and magnets checked/wiped clean. Valvoline MaxLife ATF should work fine with these two transmissions.
As far as OP's '11 goes, with all newer transmissions the fluid is checked more like a manual transmission - with a fill plug (check plug) and drain plug and within a specific temp range.

Many of the above average scan tools can read domestic transmission temperatures but not imports even if they have temperature sensors. However with the U660E IIRC the "D" light will flash a certain way if you're in the proper temperature range for fluid changes. I don't know if any ever reads ATF level however.

Yeah, I never got around to changing the fluid. My brother drives that car now and lives in another city. Maybe I'll change it next spring break. Although last time I checked, probably around 60k, the fluid was still bright red. I'll stick with Toyota WS, don't want to risk anything.
