I changed the oil and no oil plug gasket, previous change at the dealer

I went to change the oil in my Camry 08 and the oil plug did not have a gasket. Having no choice at that time as dealer was closed I put the plug back with no gasket. I went to the dealer the following week and they gave me a oil plug gasket for free. I am just wondering why no oil plug gasket when the oil change was done at the Toyota dealer ?

tech forgot it? just because it's the dealership, don't always expect quality work.

Next time you change the oil, see if a gasket is stuck to the oil pan.

Yes, check to see if the gasket is stuck to the oil pan. Also, rub clean oil on gasket and plug so that it doesnt get stuck and makes it easier to remove. Same goes for rubber rim of oil canisters (i4) or rubber o-rings (v6)

Stuck to the sump? was my answer also... :-)

A lot of dealers do not even remove the sump plug... they use a vacuum pipe inserted down the dip stick hole!

This reminds me when my '94 dodge caravan 3.0 v6 was new and went in for 6k or so miles service. Upon arriving home I check the service the dealer performed and found a trail of engine oil under the vehicle.

The tech only hand-tight the oil drain plug,he forgot to wrench-tight it.

Suppose I jumped on the highway for a long trip right after the service without checking? A seized engine perharps?

It pays to inspect any service after its done.

With the van, it is easy to look underneath but not that so easy with my '05 v6 camry though, I'm yet to do my own oil change with this camry.

I routinely change my own oil and if there's a gasket present upon the initial oil change, it will fall into the pan, and I neglect to retrieve it. Subsequently, I've changed the oil every 4-6k miles for 200,000 miles and never used a gasket. I ain't sayin it's proper procedure, just how it's done my this wrench monkey. (No offense to my simian bros.)
