5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Here is my contribution for the gen 6 DRL problem… well for those who think DRL could be turned off !
Note 1 : English is my second language, I hope everything is clear. If not, ask and I’ll be more than happy to clarify my tough.
Note 2 : This solution is good for me, it does’nt mess with the original wire except for one little splice on low beam because I’am installing a HID on my high beam. Any one who want to keep the original style bulb will have to cut the OEM ground wire of the high beam.
My car : Toyota Camry Hydrid 2007, Japan build and canadian version. DRL work this way when the car is on ready mode :
· Stack switch off : DRL are on
· Stack switch at parking light : DRL are on and parking light too
· Stack switch at low beam : parking light and low beam are on
· Stack switch at auto : DRL are on during the day, parking light and low beam turn on at night.
Why turn the DRL off ? Because I want to drive with my parking light and fog light only. Since I’am living in Canada, we do drive when snow fall a lot, at that time even the DRL ( high beam low intensity) is too much and the lights glare on the falling snow. Since I’am driving many miles at night on dark road, I also want to put some HID in my high beam ( all ready have some in low beam and will put some in my new projector style fog). Those are my reason, please stay focused on the post.
Stuff neaded :
· 12v dc relay, 4 pin one;
· Wire, terminal, blue splicing device, and plier
My solution is to put a 12v dc relay to control ( switch ) the ground of the DRL/high beam light. The 12v dc relay is powered ( click ) by the low beam.
My explanation :
You have to cut the ground wire that goes to both of your high beam light.Your 12v for your High beam stay untouched. Since I’am installing HID, I cut the ground of the ballast. My 2 ballast are now plugged to pin 87 (see below).
from the relay :
pin 85 is 12v from the low beam. You need to splice the 12v of the low beam. Any side will fit depending where you put your relay.
pin 86 is ground from chassis
pin 30 is jumper from pin 86
pin 87 is plugged to the ground of each high beam
That’s it ! Now your DRL are shut. But your high beam arent.
blink/flash to other car is still possible since I found that when the DRL system is on ( and with my solution it still working, it's just overide ), it’s my low beam that flash !
I did not read the entire thread...but it takes 5min to switch the drl off at your dealer with the programing interface..it's an option you can set w/o a single wire...I did that 3 year ago and it works perfect, i.e. maintaining all other functions.

I've been to 3 Toyota Dealerships and neither would do it.
Pictures... well I dont have any cause I did that mod in less then 30 min before leaving for a long trip, so lack of time you know . Took me many hours to figure it out but very less to install it !
Other reason I didnt take picture... Canadian car, salty road and rust proofing = very dirty underhood ! lol.
Wow, did not know they have an option to refuse...really?!
I've even told them its an option when they plug their computer to my car. They didn't give me the time of day but they'll go ahead and program/cut my eBay aftermarket switchblade key. Go figure.

So could they program it to add fogs to your parkings and take out the DRLs or only to take out the DRLs??
Id like to run during the day with fogs and parking lights on (or just fogs) but not those weak DRLs.

This assumes that the dealer will give you the time of day. I've been to three also and none would do it. That along with the seatbelt chimes. All of them cited "safety requirements" or "safety issues."
Dealer won't do it in Canada. It is the law to run DRL's here. Though cops don't harass me for not having them, they don't even harass me about no front plate.

That's funny. Ask them where that safety requirement is documented and why it is explained in the manual what programing options you have to change it. Some overjelous dealers I guess. Maybe I was lucky, I told them what I want and they charged me $14.95 for each setting I changed (sounded like a standard reprograming charge/fee at the time). I guess it did not hurt that I bought my car from them new and had most major mod's done by them before delivery. After that, they used my Camry in their showroom until I had time to pick it up.
not really sure what you are asking but I can run with my fogs on and w/o any DRL...
yeah but with your low beams on. I'm talking with nothing else on.
The fogs are wired in with the lowbeams on my car and theyll only come on with low beams. I'm trying to make them come on with my parking lights without turning on my low beams.

Oh, I see. I guess I have no use for that, i.e. driving with fogs only.
Get yourself Openport 2.0 passthru device and search around for the techstream software. The right search string will get you there.
It's the best $180 bucks I have spent. It's able to read other OBDII cars and it also capture the freeze frame of trigger if you got engine light.
Just don't blow up your camry with it.
