Rattling in the Steering Column 2005 Camry - Toyota Nation Forum : Toyota Car and Truck Forums

I need more help on this one all you Camry Doctors:

while driving, whether straight line highway or local street roads, in and around town, I hear this rattling noise, sound coming from the steering wheel column, not the wheel, but lower, and it does not affect the steering ability at all. the car steers very well. what can that be? sound like something is lose in there?

Jiggle the wheel a little with the key turned so the wheel is loose, and see if the u-joint on the end of the shaft is the issue. If so, give it some lithium grease.

my camry does it too but only not uneven surface roads like rocks or a washboard road...... its normal as far as i kno..... i drove an 09 vibe with alot less miles and it did the same thing

It might be the slip-joint in the lower half of the steering shaft that you can see under the dash. I could both feel and hear mine. Toyota fixed it under warranty by greasing the slip-joint splines. Regards.There is a TSB on this.
