5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello TN, I recently just bought a 2007 Camry V6 3.5 50,000 miles and I bought it from the dealer. The car fax said the oil was changed in it every 5000, on time, every time. And I have no idea what kind of oil it takes? I know it takes 5w-30 but is it conventional, syn-blend, or full syn? I plan on having this car for a while tho.
Mobil I 0W-30 will work just fine for 5000/6 months oil changes. If the oil and filters were changed every 5000 miles, your car will have many thousands of miles of service. Regards
I use 5w30 Mobil 1 in my V6 and I swear the engine is a little quieter than when I first got it (I bought mine used also) and had conventional oil in it. I've been using Mobil 1 in everything I've owned for the last 15 years and have never had a oil related problem. I even use it in my air cooled engines (snowblower, lawn mower and tractor). The most noticeable difference comes when you start the car in temps lower than 10 degrees. Engines crank over like its still warm out. Hey, if you can afford it, use it!!

So even if the car has conventional in it do you think it is too late in the game to change to syn oil? And if I were to change to syn oil would it hurt the engine?

So do you think i will have engine issues? Right now it taps a little the first minute or so i drive it but then goes away is that a bad sign?

I wouldnt say its a problem. I do believe its common on the V6's. Mine taps very gently as well, but as soon as the engine reaches proper temp, its quiet..very quiet

No, and no. You can actually change to synthetic at any time you want. Just remember if you have some sort of gasket leak, the synthetic will make it more pronounced (but it does not make it worse).

I'm not sure what the cold clearances are on the 2007 but my 2004 V6 has .006-.010 on the intakes and .010-.014 on the exhaust valves. You have to expect that you are going to hear some noisy from the valve train with 24 valves. The old V8s with adjustable rockers made all kinds of noisy until they warmed up and even when up to operating temp. Regards.
isn't all 2007 and up toyotas comes with syn.blend oil?
that supports 5K intervals. on regular 3K, on full syn, 8-10-12. some recomend to change filter half way.

^No, only since 2010 has Toyota been switching to synthetic oil. Even the current 2011 Camry V6 is still 5w-30 dino oil. They 4 cylinder comes with 0w-20 synthetic.

This a common 3.5 V6 characteristic. The pistons in this engine are a loose fit and the engine develops piston slap on cold startups. As soon as the piston gets a little heat in them they expand slightly and the rap goes away. Usually only takes a minute or two and no harm is being done to the engine. Synthetic oil does not help this noise whatsoever, only heat takes away the rap. The valvetrains are also a little on the noisy side and this is what the synthetic oil helps through reduced friction.

I know Syn. oil is good for areas that get cold but anyone know is its good for warm areas??? never gets below 40 here and i dunno if syn is good under all yr around heat

So i live in an area where it gets down to 5 degrees and upwards of 100 degrees. Do you think full syn provide more protection? I called the dealer from where I bought it, they said they use syn-blend. Is it worth the extra money for full syn?
