A/C problem in 2003 Camry XLE V6

My 2003 Camry XLE V6 Japan Made with 120K mileage is having A/C problem, these are the symptoms:
A/C does not cool when the car is idling.
A/C only cools at night when the car is moving.

I have replaced the refrigerant but no improvement in cooling.
No blinking A/C light.
No strange noise.

A technician suggested i should change the compressor but i'm skeptical.

Any suggestion?

1. Are you trained for this work and licensed to handle refrigerants?
2. Describe your procedure for replacing the refrigerant.
3. What were the high and low pressures when charged and what was the ambient temperature.
4. Are the fans cycling on and off with the compressor?
5. Has the system ever been open and then not evacuated?

I can't discern where you live from your location but maybe you live in an area where you have high humidity with warm to high temperatures. It's normal for the AC not to put out as much cold air when idling, you don't have adequate air flow through the condenser. Check the lines running into and out of the evaporator at the firewall. The larger line should feel cool to the touch and the liquid line should be warm to hot. Have an AC specialist do the high/low pressure checks as gdanaher suggested. Also the dryer/filter in the condenser may have failed. Regards.

The technician obviously didn't know what he was doing. It's more common than you think.

Has he checked the evaporator temperature? Heater/vent control flaps?

I understood that air was blowing but it was warm air. Was I mistaken? Is the problem that of lack of air blowing through the vents? That is entirely a different issue.

If air flow is acceptable but is warm, the compressor is running, the radiator fans are running, the issue is most likely the compressor. Your repair guy surely put gauges to the system in order to charge it, so he must have seen the head pressure was low or the suction pressure was too high. If he said you probably needed a compressor, then he is likely making that prescription based upon the numbers he is seeing in his gauge.

Another issue. In recent years, Toyota has used a variety of oils in their systems and they are not all compatible. Mywife's RAV4 took a hit, the shop used the wrong oil, and 2 weeks later the compressor failed. Talk to Toyota to verify which oil should be used in the system.

This particular year Camry also had some issues with the magnetic clutch Relay. The original part in the car(90987-02022) has been updated to a (90987-02028) and solves about 75-80% of the "AC not cooling or getting cold" complaints.

May want to check that as well.

Thanks for your replies,
I've been able to establish the fact that the compressor is bad and needs to be changed, but the technician is suggesting i change the evaporator, condenser and the expansion valve because of black residue in the system. Any suggestion?

Heater/vent control flaps

What could cause the Heater/vent control flaps to not operate properly? All the air blows thru the vents and defrost vents.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the black residue is some sort of mildew. Our store offers an AC refresh service that would eliminate that, if it is mildew.

First guess, A servo may be out, or the door is just stuck.
