6th generation Camry problems

I am thinking about buying a used 2009 or 2010 Camry (4 cylinder). My last two cars were Camrys and they were both extremely reliable. After reading all of the negative reviews and comments on internet forums, I am a bit reluctant to purchase one now. The Camrys that I have seen so far didn't appear to have any obvious build quality issues and didn't exhibit any hesitation, lurching, or downshifting problems with the transmission that many people have complained about. Has Toyota corrected these problems or do these problems only occur once the car has a lot of mileage? (The cars I saw had less than 30,000 miles). I have read a lot of complaints about creaks in the dash but wasn't sure if Toyota has found a fix for this problem yet. I didn't notice this problem in the rental car that I had. Are there any other common problems that I should look out for when purchasing a 2009 or 2010 model? I plan on getting the car checked out before I purchase one and will either get a certified used Toyota or purchase a platinum Toyota extended warranty for some peace of mind.

I've had a '10 LE (4-cyl) for a little over 1½ years and have had none of the problems I've seen mentioned here. I will admit that I don't dog it and don't turn the volume on the radio up and am a conservative driver. My shifting is smooth (automatic) braking is smooth and have no rough acceleration.

you should definitely get the extended warranty, things will start to take a dump after 60+ k's, namely the water pump alternator, those wont last very long

You should test drive a Camry at a dealer to see how you like the ride (especially when you're afraid of the transmission). Reviews, as well as opinions here, are biased and subjective. Experience the car for yourself is the best way to decide whether you want to buy the car or not.

Have a 2010 XLE V6, just over a year old.

By now the transmission 'hunt & seek' on down shifting has stopped and the down shifts are positive and rock solid.

Gas mileage is as claimed, 7 & 11 (highway & city). am getting great mileage even in the extremely cold weather we've had the past while.

Only have good things to say... unlike a lot of the posts I've read the past year on here.

Are people having problems with their water pumps and alternators at 60K? My 98 Camry still has its original alternator at 13 years/102K and I didn't have any problems with my water pump until 90K/12 years old. I never had anything go wrong with my 96 or 98 Camry that would have been covered under an extended warranty. I plan on getting an extended warranty just for peace of mind though since it appears that Toyotas are going down in quality.

Water pumps? You get a definite maybe on that one. They are a weak spot. Alternators? Hardly ever. I can't remember the last time we put an alternator in Gen 6 Camry. For all the people on here bitchin about all the problems they had, there are 100's of thousands of owners that haven't and are generally pleased with their Camry.

My Camry has a great ride, pretty quiet and I have no rattles.
My really only complaint is a fit and finish issue.
All my door gaps are a bit too wide.
I'm definitely buying a discounted Toyota extended warranty from Troy Dietrich if I decide to keep the car after basic warranty.
Toyota quality isn't what it was in the past.

I've had a number of Toyota's and they all have been very reliable. ALL cars break, new and old, and parts fail. Toyota's have historically been on the upper end of reliability.

We've had our '07 Camry Hybrid for almost 5 years. It has about 55,000 miles on it and hasn't given us any problem.
