Double sided tape for OE-like spoiler

Hi guys, Purchased a OE like spoiler for my 07 Camry from another member here. Good deal since it was already painted. The seller installed the spoiler with double sided tape industrial strength or 3M. He claims he has never had a problem. After asking around..Lots of people told me not to do it that way. Told me just to bolt it down. Any thoughts on this before i go ahead and install?

I see no problems with 3m tape as long its Heavy Duty molding tape or automotive molding tape. My question is since you got it used is the tape still in good shape? if not go to autozone and re-tape it. Either take off the old tape or re-tape it on top of the old one.

Once you have done that you're ready to install it. Here is the most important thing, get a hairdryer or a heatgun. While you have your spoiler installed on your trunk heat up the spoiler around the edges where the tapes sit. This will help the adhesive on the tape to stick to the trunk a lot better.

Trust me I had to redo my roof spoiler because I installed it in a cold day. I didn't even think about using the hairdryer / heatgun to heat up the tape. But once I redid the whole thing with new 3m heavy duty / super strength automotive tape combining with the hairdryer. Thing is stuck like super glue, I can't even take it off I need KING KONG to remove it.

Hope this helps. Let us know what happens.

Oh i forgot to mention apply body pressure on the spoiler while heating it up with a hairdryer / heatgun

Even if the double sided tape looks like its still good after removed, its best to put new tape. The strength is never the same when removed and tried to be reapplied.

ALWAYS wash the car or the trunk to get rid of any debris, dust or dirt.

Hi

I just picked up a rear lip spoiler from the spoiler factory on Ebay. I had similar question to this post. It came with double sided tape and 2 mounting screws. I read a few posts where people said to use silicone sealant when you drill the holes. Some people said just use the tape. I didn't want to mess up my trunk so wondering what people recommend? Only tape or both? I live in NE Ohio so it gets cold during winter, not like SoCal. I don't mind drilling and have the interior trunk liner removed. But I don't want to create a water leak either. Thanks

Mine came with both too. I drilled the holes and used a good quality sealant. I've had several chances to test it for leaks while washing the car and hasn't leaked yet.

Water is getting in there, just not enough for you to notice. The exposed metal and moisture will = rust eventually. But takes much longer in your area of US, no salt.

If you say so. Lucky me then. No salt in my area. Would rust eventually. Would have traded it by that time.

Thanks for the tips. I should be able to mount it later in the week. I was a little nervous about drilling the holes and everything. Didn't want to mess up my car. My next project is window tinting. I have someone locally that installs either Suntek or scorpion window tinting $150 installed. I was going to get the Suntek probably around 35% tint.

Just had that done. Wish I'd gone out and checked it with the installer, the factory tint wasnt that dark to start with, should have gone darker. Suggest you do that. Have them take a sheet so you can see what its going to look like.

$150 is too much in NE ohio. my friend own this shop & he'll hook u up. he does 1 piece back window while others cut the tint in half then piece them together. 2 doors = $90 & 4 door = $100. he has done my 05 scion tc, 06 toyota highlander & 10 toyota camry & i never had a problem with the tint
