5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have an 09 Camry V6 SE with 35k miles on it. I change my oil every 5k miles. I use Mobil1 5W30 and Purolator filters. I have noticed that the filters are collapsed in the middle when I remove them. This is a sign of excessive contamination in the filter, reducing flow. I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Also, I was told the 2011 goes 10k miles before needing an oil change. Does the 11/12 use a different/larger oil filter housing and oil filter. If so, would that housing fit the 09 Camry?
Thanks
I have use Toyota and Fram. They appear to be identical when new and when used. I've never seen wheat you described. When in doubt use the OEM filer--they cost essentially the same. Always ask for a discount at the parts counter. As for design changes, I am not aware of anything happening there, and I would never consider letting the oil change go for 10k miles, synthetic or not. Check the cost of a short block and then the cost of oil changes every 5k miles. Do the math!

change your filters more often, or use extended life filters.
I doubt you can use "bigger" filter. even if it will fit, filter mite have differend specs.
I'm using Fram XG for synthetic oil. running Valvoline, intervals 8-9K miles.
had no problems on my previous camry, used same oil and fram filters for 100+K.

No one claimed to be experts. Everyone here is a normal user like yourself regardless of status. What people post is based on self knowledge, opinion or from first hand experience. Not all information may be correct. Just like doing a Google search...not everything is correct.
Thanks for the info. I change it at the recommended service interval. I guess it could be the oil pump pressure relief. The filter housing can only take one size filter and they are only the filter element. I guess I will try changing it sooner first and see how that does. I was hoping that the new Camry had a larger filter that would keep me from changing it so quickly.
Mr. Moderator, touche - the consensus replys prior to my post were to change the filter more frequently, and knfenimore cited that he already changed his filters every 5K. I only suggested that his problem has a different solution than more frequent filter changes. Yep, you're right, they weren't experts and all Google searches aren't correct, but this one was.

Hi,
I am the tech manager at Fram Filters. You are correct in your assesment that the filter is collapsing due to contamination. The link in this thread to the FMC article on collapsed center tubes is a very clear explanation of this. We make a more heavy duty filter cartridge for your car, the Fram TG9972. Here is a link to the description-http://www.framcatalog.com/PartDetailWindow.aspx?b=F&pn=TG9972. While our standard CH9972 filter is rated for 5k on your vehicle, the TG9972 has the capacity for 7500 mile oil changes. See more at Fram.com/proof

That happened to me with a prolator at 3000 miles. Been using Toyota filters ever since and have had 0 collapsing when I change it. Use Toyota filters. Fram is garbage. As well as prolator when it comes to cartridge filters.

Purchase OEM oil filters on eBay and you wont ever have to worry again. I paid $38 (or $42) including shipping for 10. Thats $3.80-4.20 each. Here in NY if you buy FRAM, Purlator or some other brand, its over $5.
