5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I took the car to a Toyota dealer today to get a diagnosis because my AUTO switch isn't working anymore, same with the DRL's. Apparently the HID's on my fogs could very well have cause too much power through the circuit since it's all 1 circuit which blew something that controls the AUTO switch and DRL lights.
Anyone ever have this issue? Does a different bulb size matter? Because I used projectors in my fogs and the bulb changed from H11 to an 880. If I go ahead and get the wires checked and tested it's going to cost me so much. Going rate is $102/hour plus tax. What do I do?
How did you wire up the HID for the headlight and fog? Was the HID systems powered through sets of relays?

I ordered from Krypton Bulbs. I ordered 4 kits, 1 for my girl, 1 for my bud and 2 for me (lows and fogs). When I went to help my buddy with his, turned out 1 ballast kept blowing fuses so I gave him mine (so all I could do was my fogs or lows), informed the owner, cut the wires for proof it was bad and finally got my ballast today.
So, I only managed to put my fogs in and nothing in my lows just yet. He said everything I needed was in the kit. The ballast, some box looking thing I think maybe a capacitor connected to it and the bulbs of course.
Remember, the fogs were done 2 weeks ago. My AUTO worked fine up until 2 days ago. When Toyota lifted the car, unplugged the ballast to see if it would work then, nothing happened.
Fuses are all good, they've all been checked. My fog is now an 880 bulb so I need to plug that in then to see but it'll be a pain in the ass since I used a connector to attach the wires and heated a rubber tube to make it air tight.
1) If you take off your HID kits, does the AUTO headlights function work normally?
If yes, then go to 2.
If no, have your dealer check the AUTO function.
2) How did you wire your fog? Do you have OEM fog lights (ie, OEM stick switch or separate button, or what?)
3) Try manually turning on your headlights; does everything work normally?
4) Try installing HID kits in your low beam and see whether everything works. (Nvm, you will need a different socket for H11. What I'm trying to identify is which part of your HID kit is not working correctly). Anyway, what exactly each part are you using? Where did you get them? Here is what I assume:
- Ballast: from Krypton
- Bulbs: from Krypton
- Projector: Balzer from TRS
- Harness: from Krypton
Correct?
5) Do you use a relay harness?
The bulb size does not matter. If you use a relay, the stock wiring current is just a switch to activate your harness, which draws electricity directly from the battery.
if u didnt use a relay harness on ur HIDs in ur fogs and ur using factory wiring, theres a VERY good chance u burnt up some kind of module or circuit by overpowering it (when HID's turn on they draw ALOT of power then gradually decreases)
u might have a faulty ballast that aided in killing a circuit etc. if that is the case
idk anything about krypton HID's so im not sure of their quality.
so yes, i would unplug the entire HID kit, put ur stock bulbs back into the factory plug and see if they work, if they dnt then u have a burnt circuit or somethin of the sort (since ur fuses are all fine) u can always check continuity of the factory foglight wires to see if u can find out if the wire burnt up somewhere, using a multimeter. (dnt bother if u have no clue wut im talkin bout)
you shouldnt leave it on auto if you have hid kit(s) installed, cranking up the car itself takes quite a bit of power, and as someone mentioned its also takes alot of power for the hid's to ignite initially, high chance something in the system burnt out because there is not a readily available and steady flow of power on start up, if you've havent already, put all the stock bits back on before going to dealer or its gona be hard to go through warranty
I have HID and keep everything as normal, and they all work normally, even when I turn the key and the headlights are activated at the same time. A relay harness, not costing much, will give a piece of mind, but I don't understand why people are so cheap on that.
Anway, just wait for the OP's outcome.
