Duct Seal - Inexpensive sound deadener

Hi everyone:

I have been experimenting with duct seal - it is a clay like compound made by Gardner Bender designed to plug holes, etc. It has a high (100C) temperature tolerance, and does not harden. Its pretty cool stuff. The TDS is http://sealersinc.com/1003_TDS.pdf

I was hoping to avoid having to spend the money on butyl based sound deadener - as $1/sq ft it can get pricy quickly. Home Depot sells this stuff for ~$2.50 for a 1 lb block. I installed Alpine 6x9 coaxial in the rear deck - an Amplifier will be added this summer - but the stock HU was vibrating the rear deck. I rolled out 3lbs of the stuff today and laid it down on the bare metal and the plastic deck cover.

It makes a world of difference - I need to go back and buy some more, but it is weighty and stops the annoying plastic and metal rattle. I'll post pictures soon.

why not the peal and seal ?
I did the doors and trunk in my accord with a similar product in canada, noticeable difference right away in terms of sound quality from my components. People were right when they said it really gets that extra bit out of your speakers

^If you want to try roofing membranes, try your rona's,
SOME carry the peel and seal.

Or look for the "resisto" membrane for roofing, its the same stuff. Make sure to clean your surfaces, bonding to a clean surface makes a huge difference. I paid $31, for a 20" x 33' roll, I would say enough for 1 layer on all 4 doors, trunk lid and rear deck with some left over.

If not there are a few other brands on the market that are butyl based that I cant think of atm.

Install

I finished off the rear deck and the drivers door today - it took me about an hour and a half. To remove the rear deck, you pull off the c-pillar panels (held on by clips), pull the rear seats down, and slide out the plastic deck. The first picture below shows the duct seal. I rolled it out and pressed it on with a wallpaper seam roller. I also pressed some onto the plastic deck panel.

I bought Resisto - its rubber roofing material with a sticky back. I got a 33x3 roll for $35. THe stuff is heavy, probably about 35lbs for the entire roll. It is easy to cut, and I applied it in pieces around the rear deck and inside the drivers door. It sticks to itsself well, as long as you use a hand roller to ensure good contact with the sheet metal (otherwise the dampening effect will be lost).

The youtube video below is a comparison between the drivers and rear door - I layered a 3x3 piece on the inside of the door, and it seems to work quite well!
