Upper intake manifold

On a camry xle v6 2005 do I have to drain coolant and depressurize gas line if only i remove the upper manifold ? I am trying to reach the spark plugs on the back . I was able to only change the front and the back passenger's side one.

The throttle body has coolant circulating through it so you have to remove both of these hoses before you remove the "intake air surge tank." I would think that draining the radiator would be sufficient to get the coolant level low enough so you don't lose any. Also,there are two "stays" and one "engine hanger attached to the surge tank plus several clamps supporting somekind of a tube. Use a new gasket,tighten the surge tank bolts to proper torque in the recommended criss-cross pattern.I don't think you have to do anything to the fuel system. Regards

Let me know how the plugs come out. I have this maintenance on my 2004 coming up and am concerned about how the plugs will come out after being in there eight years. And you should probably put a light coating of anti-sieze on the plug threads being careful not to get any on the electrodes. I always torque the plugs, but I think you can tighten to plugs by feel if you are careful. The anti-sieze will change the required torque somewhat. Regards.

i have done this chore on my 2002 V6 and i DID NOT remove the bundle of snakes to get at the plugs. It's possible but not easy. The main reason i didn't want to remove the plenum was because i don't want to risk a vacuum leak that might happen after changing a gasket that was sealing before i changed it.

If you want to try the ship-in-a-bottle plug changing method, here are a few tips, you will want to start with a clean engine because you are going to be laying across it. Also the engine should be cold both for your own safety and comfort and because you could conceivably wreck the threads in the head by removing spark plugs from a hot engine (aluminum heads cooling down).

Wow, drain your radiator to change plugs? like Almighty said, make sure your engine is clean and cool. I used a combination of 3/8 drive extensions and a small telescoping magnet for grabbing plugs once they are unthreaded. Take your time and concentrate on what you're feeling because you'll be working blind.
