Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello,
1) My car is over 3 years old now, and I think I need a new set of high beam bulbs. What do you recommend for choosing a halogen high beam bulb (9005 bulb) for my 08 Camry? I will use the auto function all the time, so it means my high beam bulb is used as DRL. I also flash my high beam for guys blinding me when they're alone on the road (not very often but enough to bother me), so what I need for high beam bulb is intensity (the most light). Cool colors such as blue and JDM yellow are not my taste.
2) Can I use HIR1? If so, has anyone tried it and told me whether the DRL is going to be too bright? How bright is it compared to a normal bulb? Is it a waste if I use HIR1 for my high beam? I want the bulb's service life to be at least like my current old bulb.
3) I can't use Catz Zeta because of the voltage regulation, can I?
4) Does anyone notice the high beam bulbs become more brown? I think when applied PWM to prevent the halogen cycle from occurring, which keeps the bulb clear and prevents early burnout, the bulbs never get to normal operating temps, they will be gradually messed up.
5) If none of the above is applied, what bulbs do you suggest?
Thank you very much!
PS: I just added a question about the fog bulbs.
6) Which halogen fog bulb do you recommend me? I'm not interested in deep yellow bulbs.
I use the HIR1 for my high beams but I never use the DRL's so can't comment on longevity. There is a big difference in light output however and I'm very pleased with the upgrade.

1) OEM give you the most light. Philip might have a replacement for a bit brighter but you are sacrificing it's life span.
6) Check your fog housing, if it's not cover (can see the bulb clearly from the front) than it's best you stick with OEM. If it's covered (all lights are reflected light) than you can go HID. If U do go HID, best not to flash highbeam when having Fog lights on because highbeam will turn off the fog.

I went with Phillips Crystal Vision Ultra in My lows, highs, and fogs and I'm happy with them. They are whiter and a little brighter.

I'm not quite sure which OEM and Philips bulbs you're talking about. I'm looking for halogen bulbs to replace my halogen high beam 9005 bulbs and fog H11 bulbs.
My fog lights are not OEM; my car does not come with OEM fog. I bought the turn signal stick with fog switch, a fuse, and fog kit; and installed them so that I don't need a separating button to control the fogs. What bulbs do you suggest? I used H11 before, and I'm thinking H9 now. I understand there is 10W increasing of H9 bulbs, but I don't think the heat will be a problem, won't it?
The reason I do H9 to H11 conversion is H9 gives out 2100 lm, while H11 gives out about 1300 lm. I wonder whether there is any other better option.
im on HIR highbeams, theyre noticably brighter, and they hurt the eyes when you look at them, so yeah... they arent too bright for DRL, but i can't comment on how long they last since i havent run these dead yet
I want to see these compared. Someone who is changing their lights should do a test with pics before and after; and one traditional in and a test one in. Wondering if a retrofit was worth it.

I, like many others, can't stand how short the life is on the Sylvania SilverStar Ultras. I've upgraded to SOLUX technology which lasts as long as standard halogen rather than only around a year like the Ultras. They're not super-white or blue-ish but that has nothing to do with true brightness. That said, they're definitely brighter...they advertise 80% brighter yet street legal, longest beam and best replication of daylight (4600k) of any halogen style bulb. So far, so good - I love them...especially on my high-beams...and I live in the country (very dark) and use my lights quite a bit.
