5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
After searching the threads I noticed a member who had this problem with their Tacoma, but I haven't come across any Camry owners who have had this issue.
I have a 2011 Camry SE that I picked up in August. Before I left for Detroit last weekend, I noticed that 2 of my rims are starting to corrode near the center cap. Before I left I had 4,050 miles on the car!!!!! I frequently wash and clean out the rims with non-scratching cloths and a wheel cleaner and polish.
Anyone else have this problem, and if so, what did you do to fix it? I work for a dealership, but since I'm an employee...well, you fill in the blanks

"This warranty covers repair or replacement of any original body panel that develops perforation from corrosion (rust-through)......coverage is for 60 months, regardless of mileage."

i didn't have alloy wheels, but i had steelies and whatever part that was not covered by the hubcap it rusted all 4 wheels...i also think it might have been this automatic carwash i went too, it had the tire scrubbers thing that comes out and scrubs the wheel area....i had a 09 le camry...i got annoyed with looking at it so i replaced them with 16" alloy momo wheels. haha
I feel like this is a common problem with these alloys. I have the 17" 8-spoke wheels that came on the XLEs and Hybrids for 07-09 I have noticed this happening on mine as well. I have seen several Camrys with these rims that have chipping/peeling/pitting near the center cap.

I have noticed this just being a general problem with older Acuras, Hondas, Lexus, and Toyotas. I don't know whats going on, but its not rare to see corroded rims with these types of finish.

The exact same thing happened on my 07 Hybrid. One of the wheels was showing bad signs of corrosion before 36K miles, and it was replaced under warranty. I now have about 60K miles on the car, and the other three rims are showing bad signs of corrosion near the center cap, and the one that was replaced is showing minor signs. I'm sure that it will show more as time goes on.
It makes me upset because I use nothing but soap and warm water on the rims... they are cleaned regularly. I guess that's the price we pay for living in a state where a significant amount of salt is used in winter.
So, can you get the steelies replaced under warranty? I bought the car pre-owned (certified), I didn't get any manuals, and I've noticed rust on the areas not covered by the hubcaps. I just had $1000 worth of work done on the car under warranty (including the accelerator recall), so I can tack that on the list of things I got fixed within a week of getting the car. lol

Tell me about it. You and I live in the same area, roughly. Salt=

True, but I sincerely hope they don't start corroding again in 4000 miles. I mean, how can you call that a good enough rim to go out on a brand new car if it's going to look horrendous in just months, instead of years? I had the same problem on my 2004 Mustang, but they didn't start until 45,000 miles. That at least makes some sense....
