5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys, I tried to search for this but no luck. So here goes.
I bought a 08 camry Se 4cyl. from a dealership (Carmax) and the 2 piece upper half (the lower half is still there) heatshield thats goes over the main exhaust mainfold was missing. So the salesman said he would get it repalced free of charge. This should have been my first sign. Anyways later on he brings a service guy in and he says toyota made a desgin change of the mainfold in the middle of the year, which makes it sit up higher and the original heat shield will not fit. So i went up to toyota and asked the service guy, parts guy, and even a mechanic and they said they do not know of a exhaust mainfold change or redesgin for 08 or any other year. The mechanic said the only thing that he knew was they a bracket change on the 00 camry for the lower part of the exhaust mainfold.
So my question is does anyone know of a desgin change in the exhaust mainfold or is the dealer yanking my chain! Aka Fubar
well when YOU think about it, who would be more correct...a Toyota dealer.....or a used car dealership that only deals in USED cars...and has to buy parts from a Toyota dealer...???..
I'm with glenn on this one...if the dealership says there's no change, then I highly doubt there's a change. They work on tons of camrys at the service depots at dealerships so I'd trust the service guys there over a third party dealer.
I'd go back to the place you bought it from and ask them to show you where Toyota has documented that they changed the part.

does the car have federal or california emmisions?
This question makes all the difference, California emissions vehicles don't have the heatshield like the others do. If you can take a pic of the engine we can tell for sure if it should or shouldn't have one. The CA cars manifolds are very different so we will be able to tell, other than that, there were changes made (visually) to the cover through the years, but no omission/deletion of the heatshield during any of the years. Except of course the CA cars.

Thanks guys. Not sure if its a Calif. car but i will take a pic and put it on here asap.
From the carfax, the car was in the NY area when it was brand new and had several emission test done on it.
All passed.

The top pic is of the CA PZEV emissions car and the bottom is the standard emissions vehicle. PZEV is Practically Zero Emissions Vehicle, the other Camrys are just ULEV's or Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles.

The O2 sensor is located at the top of the manifold so it can measure emissions as soon as the exit the engine and make adjustments to run cleaner, where as the others are located at the catalytic converter and measure at the burnoff off emissions to make adjustments to run cleaner.
