5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So my dog chewed up a one of the two master keys for my camry. I purchased one from ebay and took it to the dealer. However he warned me it might not work. I thought I would ask for people's advice on which pathways to take.
I've googled and for sure the master key I have is a 4d key (has the little metal circle at the base of the metal key). However, the key I bought from ebay doesn't have this metal circle but the seller claims that it would still work. The transponder are identical so I'm guessing that is a green light. Any ideas on who to believe?
4d from eBay that I purchase before do not have circle stamp.
I trust the eBay seller.

Awesome thanks for all the replies. I was wondering if its possible for me to program the keys myself and have a locksmith cut the keys instead of going to the dealer?
I can't seem to find specific instructions on how to program theses keys to the car.

No, only a dealer or certified locksmith with the right scan tool can program the gen 6 and 6.5's.

Not 100% true. You cannot program the key yourself, but its not just dealers and certified locksmiths that can program them. You might find some hardware stores will be able to, and a few other places (such as where i work) so just ask around and try to get a good price. Locksmiths are really freakin expensive even when you do have your own key blank.

I'm just going to give my thread a slight bump with an update.
I brought the key to the dealership and he stated that because there was no tiny circle at the base of the metal key(S chip) I believe. I then ordered just the housing and tried to reuse the transponder from my ebay key. The key starts the car now but the transponder won't function.
Did you put the transponder chip in the correct way? I believe the slanted edge goes in first. I'm not 100% on it, but try putting it in a different way and test it.

some locksmiths do it for cheap just shop around. u can get it done for less than 100$ for sure. well atleast where i live i got mine done for like 60-75$
The transponder only goes in one way though. If it's not placed in right, the back cover would not close. I don't quite understand what you're getting to.
Also I've tried calling numerous locksmiths around town and they do not have the equipment to do it or they just referred me to go to the dealer.
the 4D chip is below. Dealer will super glue it or hot glue it. I would hot glue it as it is easier to cut through when you need to switch it to a newer FOB down the road.
Programming required Denso Techstream software and generic pass-thru device.

My key transponder doesn't look like that at all. I'm guessing it might not be a 4d chip? I have attached pics.
That chip is in your key. It's very small; about a 1cm in size. It's in a slot that's glued in. You need to remove it with a heat gun and put it in your new key.
I found what you guys are talking about. it's on the top left of the key if you're looking at it with the back cover removed. However, the problem I'm having is that the unlock/lock/panic/trunk buttons won't work on the new key. But the new key starts the car. I'm guessing that the small chip works with the engine immobilizer while the transponder (lock/unlock etc) works separately.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I tested this by swapped the non-working transponder with my other fully working key and no success with the buttons. But both start the car.
the keyless entry system (lock unlock trunk panic) is programmed separately but same software to program.
