5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2008 Toyota Camry, with only 25k miles on it. A few days ago I noticed my rims have started to rust. Basically, whatever part not covered by the hubcap is rusted on all 4 wheels.
I went to my dealer and he submitted a claim but Toyota is not going to fix it for me.
Does anybody know if there is any difference in quality between an OEM rim and the accessory Toyota rim above ? I am a bit surprised that the accessory rim is less then half the price of the the OEM rim.
P.S. This really seems to be a wide spread issue. Since this happened to me, I started to pay attention and I noticed a lot of gen. 6 Camry with rusted steel rims. I can't believe Toyota is not acknowledging this as being a quality issue on their part.
for less than half price of new wheels, even aftermarket once, I bet you can get OEM used in great condition.
at least in US set of OEM wheels cost 300-400, with new tires $7-800.
look around, not only toyota wheels got rust:
I'm in TX, we snow and salt for 4-5 weeks a year, but still all cars got rust on still rims.
if you want to keep rust away, you need to clean rims regularly.
same with alloys: if you will not care about them, you'll see oxidation on dings and scratches in couple years for sure.

I am washing my car after every snow fall in the winter, that is why I was so intrigued by this rusting. The salt does not stay on my rims for more then 1 day.
I also have an Accord, 9 years old ... and the steel wheels are looking better then in my 3 years old Camry. And they are driven in the same conditions.
i had the same problem with my oem steel wheels, all 4 rusted where the hubcaps didn't cover. So i bought some momo 16" alloy wheels off discount tire direct and they look like the OEM wheels too which is why i chose them. I paid like 350 shipped for them without tires.
thanks guy, my car is also dropped on h&r springs. I just kept the momo center cap i didn't feel like getting the toyota center caps it doesn't really bother me and i don't know if the toyota center cap will fit these i didn't bother looking into them. lol
i don't know if they are still available or not i tried to search with putting my 09 camry in it and those wheels didn't come up as one of the options.
You are right that these wheels do not come up when you search by car but the wheels are there. As a matter of fact, their eBay store says these wheels do not fit the 2011 Camry but will fit 2010. Right. Must be a database problem.
Did you transfer your TPMS sensors to these wheels. I saw these wheels come with free lug nuts.
yeah i don't know why its not showing up, i bought them i think back in march few months ago. yeah i had the tpms transfered over. They come with free lug nuts and hubcentric rings with the wheel installation kit. I also got the tpms replacement kit thing but when i took it to the shop they didn't use it and just reused the old ones. I also just used my old tires because i just had them replaced a few months ago so their basically like new and all said and done i paid like 85 dollars to have them mounted and balanced and put on at a shop.
^^ yup thats exactly what mine looked like, i tried using rust remover and was going to repaint the steel wheels but decided not too. Whatever the hubcaps didn't cover it was rusted.

same as mine, my steel wheels got rusted as well, what i did is i just took off the cover, then sand paper the rusted area and simply repaint it with black paint.
i know it gonna rust again, so whenever it rust, i jsut paint it again.. it cost me too much to get a new set of rims.
