New 2011 6sp Auto seems to make a high pitched whine sound as revs climb
I just traded my 08 4cyl LE for a 2011 4cyl LE.
Love the 6speed Auto and the ten extra hp & tq.
However, do the 6 speeds tend to be whiny above 2000 rpm or should I take her in?
It almost sounds like a blower at WOT but not as loud. Does not happen in neutral when you rev it.
I had a friend tell me it just the planetary gears whining...
The 08 made no such noise. What say you all?
BTW I got the black and she looks great with $250 alloy option.

As a test, remove the belt from the power steering pump and try it then. If it (the whine) don't stop trany problem, if it stops PS pump.

I thought about isolating the PS because it mimics that sound.
Keep in mind it does not do it in neutral which makes me think its drivetrain related...
Maybe the new 2 serp belt system is supposed to be noisy? Belt Tensioner ?

I have a whine, sounds like alternator noise in the radio, been trying to get it fixed for almost a year, dealer refuses..... So the warranty from Toyota hasn't been honored, to date, looking for a new dealer........

My '11 also has a whine from the engine. It's worse in cold weather. It correlates to engine revolutions, in Park, Neutral, Drive, etc. It has the sound of a bad bearing. The dealer has said it's normal. Indeed, every other 2011 Camry I've heard has that sound. The tech who worked on my car also has an '11 Camry (also 2.5L) and it has the exact same noise. So indeed, for better or for worse, it DOES appear to be normal.

Normal operation. It's much more noticeable on the 6 Cylinder cars with this trans, but again it's normal.
I've yet to hear this whine.. then again, my last car had an old tensioner and I heard the whine all day err day. Is there a vid on it?
It's quite subtle, if you're driving the 4cyl you really have to be listening for it and sort of anal about noises to hear it. Use the manual mode, hold first gear up to 4000RPMS and you'll hear it. If you have the 6, you can actually hear it with the engine idling esp if the hood is up. Its something on the very front of the tranny that makes this noise, like the TC or an associated pump.
Just for grins I test drove a 2011 Scion TC with the same engine / trans.
Did not hear any whine at all but the cheesy exhaust drone
and higher level of road noise (from the 18's) may have cancelled it out.

He 's right. You have to be looking for it to hear it but its a sound that should not be there....oh well

My 2008 V6 that was traded in did that. My current 2010 does it. And my 2011 I4 does it. It's a trait of the Aisin U series trans that we all have to get used to. Drive on a road with a cement barrier with your windows down and feather the throttle. You'll all hear it.

Could anyone provide an explanation to: Removing the belt to the PS pump, the whine goes away in my car, just makes it a lot harder to steer.

What year model and mileage do you have? Clearly the noise you are hearing is different than the tranny whine as you have narrowed it down to the serp belt accessories. If its a gen 6 remember that belt doesn't just drive the PS pump, so it could be the WP, alternator......any of the tensioners......
When you have the belt removed did you try turning the pullys? If one is unusually stiff its likely the culprit of the noise.

2011 2.5L XLE NU build Feb. 25, 2010 Purchased May 01, 2010 Just shy of 15,000 Miles. Whine diagnosed in Aug 2010 at a dealer while on a trip, couldn't wait for pump. Correspondence from that service dealer to my local purchase dealer stated problem, recommended replacement with part numbers. My dealer refuses to correct the problem, after 5 plus 70 mile trips of complaints.
Looking for a new dealer........
