5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just in case you're curious to see what one looks like totaled... Someone made a u-turn in front of me and I swerved to avoid and ended up hitting a pole doing about 40. Was able to walk away.. My nose broke when I went into the airbag, and I have a bulging disc in my lower back, but I consider myself lucky to be alive. Also- The driver's knee airbag they started putting in the 2011, according to the firefighters, saved my legs from being broken.
Luckily this wasn't my baby, it was a loaner.. Mine was in the shop for a high speed vibration problem.
Luckily you're alright. I think you were following him/her too close.
I wasn't following, they made the u-turn, I attempted to avoid by swerving into the outside lane, and they also swerved into the outside lane (he said he did that because he noticed me after he had already began turning) causing me to swerve to the right again. I guess you could say he ran me off the road. The guy admitted he didn't see me. He never even stopped his vehicle before making the u-turn, he just swung around carlessly. I had "no contributing action" to the crash on the report and the other driver's contributing action was "improper turn".

but how is this going to work out ? the camry is a toyota loaner?
also is his insurance covering it? Its a good thing he stopped? Most people would've just booked it !

and I beleive my 07 has those knee air bags too
I'm not sure, I'm guessing Toyota's insurance co. is going to request reimbursement from mine, and mine will request reimbursement from his. I went ahead and hired an attorney.
Yes, it's a very good thing that he stopped. At least he has a conscience. He knew that he screwed up. I'm hoping that the next left turn or u-turn that he makes, he'll come to a complete stop before swinging into oncoming traffic.

When you swerve, all your WHOLE weight is put into ONE wheel. If you just stop, it would have been TWO wheels. Do you think you have a better chance with two wheel stopping?
There is no blame here. Just curious which is a better chance of 'survival'. Glade you made it out with everything not majorly damaged. Have a beer and recuperate
Looks bad and glad you aren't dead, but the car doesn't look dead. There are some good auto body guys out there that will make that car look brand new a week. It's only front end damage. The rear still looks sweet.

I used to be in pretty much the same situation. I was driving on the left lane of a 4-lane road when a car from the right curb jumped quickly in front of me. He didn't see me because there was another car making a turn ahead of me blocking his view. Luckily, he stopped and his car's nose was in half of my lane. I braked really hard and swerved to my left. I ended up driving in the left part of the road, and there was a car coming up ahead of me. I had to accelerate and swerved back to the right. The whole process was like I drove in the S style in only a few seconds.
That day was a nightmare for me. I don't believe if I'm able to do that again! I guess the VSC must kick in to help me control my car so that I didn't feel any skidding or lose control.

Between running off the road and running into the other vehicle, I wouldn't have chosen the pole unless it was a semi coming head-on. Sorry to say, but this will probably go on your driving record, not as a fault, but as a claim. I know I'd me mad as hell, rental or not, plus you got injured. Hopefully your attorney is aggressive and the police report is favorable with the other driver's comments on record.
