When I put the car into reverse the reverse lights turn on but the HU does not switch to camera... I connected the red wire to the red wire and black wire to the white wire with black stripe. I tried to reverse them and still nothing. The brake lights dim when I connect them and un-dim when I disconnect them so Im assuming its getting power... please help! do I need to have the headlights on? hand brake off? help! Thanks !

Please let us know what kind of headunit you have so we can further assist.. It is pretty rare for the head unit to auto switch to reverse cam on video signal alone which is what would have to happen for the way you have it set up..
I know most pioneers have a wire on the back that you hook up to the positive reverse wire(its usually purple/white from what i can remember).. So when you put it in reverse that signal tells the HU to switch sources to backup cam.. also make sure you have it enabled.. some HU require you enable backup cam in the menu.. and also let you choose the polarity of the reverse wire in that menu..
Also SOME reverse cams will actually go dead if you hook them up backwards.. depending on the quality.. and from what you said how you tried reversing them that could have caused it to fry...
one thing that leads me to believe that you may have fried the cam is you said the brakelights dim when you hook it up.. if it was a current hungry device that would make sense.. however those cameras take hardly ANY current.. definately not enough to cause a dim in the lights..
Most likely the dim is cause by a short inside the camera(usually from being fried)..
Be careful I have seen some cameras nearly start a fire behind the HU because they were hooked up wrong.. literally saw a flame start a tons of smoke.. not sure what that installer was doing.. lol
*What i would do if i were you*
hookup the video rca from the cam to an AUX Video in RCA on the deck.. switch the deck to that aux source.. so it should be blue or black or whatever color it shows when there is no signal.. than hookup the camera to power.. just to see if the camera is still even working.. also so you can determine you have the right polarity.. if it is working there.. than go ahead and put it back on the CAM RCA than you just need to find the "Reverse signal" wire that auto switches the deck into "backup cam" mode...
hope this helps let me know if you have any questions.. also providing the HU info would help me to further assist you.
